Could those who state that 1998 was not in fact the hottest year on record but 1934 was, please advise as to the (average) global temp in both these years?

"Specifically, where 1998 (1.24 ºC anomaly compared to 1951-1980) had previously just beaten out 1934 (1.23 ºC) for the top US year, it now just misses: 1934 1.25ºC vs. 1998 1.23ºC"

Still going to ignore the facts because they don't fit in your preconceived template?

Some people do. Even though the 1930's were hot world wide, they will only select the data that fits their view and say that these numbers were from the USA only.

The fact that the 1930's had four of the hottest years and that since 2000 only one year was warm enough to even make the top 10 is important. It shows that we are not even as hot as the 1930's and all the alarmist rhetoric is way off base.

According to Stephen McIntyre who discovered the NASA error, global data is even more flawed. So until it's checked out no one can say for sure how 1934 compares to 1998, my guess is 1934 was hotter.

I have to suspect that comparing yearly, average, air temperature data for 1934 with data for 1998 is a big problem. This is a bit more complicate than comparing the temperature on my front porch at noon on August 15Th of last year with the temperature at noon today. On a worldwide basis, data collection must have changed dramatically in those intervening 60 some years. We are trying to measure the average level of heat energy retained in a sphere of air some 30,000 feet thick and some 8,000 miles in diameter. Let's not forget that 70% of the earth is covered with water and of the 30% remaining, a large portion is mostly uninhabited either because it is desert or very cold. In 1934, we can be sure that most of the air temperature measurements were taken in populated areas. To a large extent, this is still true today. In 1934, at least, we were only measuring a tiny fraction of the total atmosphere. The notion of "the hottest year on record" does not really mean that during that year there was more heat energy in our atmosphere than at any other time in the last 10,000 years, i.e. since the start of civilization. The "hottest year on record" is a journalistic notion. In other words, it's just a bunch of hype to sell newspapers and TV commercials.

A more responsible statement might be something like, "Hourly air temperature data taken at 5000 airports for the last 20 years indicates that we are in a warming trend."

Jello answers your question perfectly. People who claim that 1934 was the hottest year lie by omission. Jello conveniently fails to mention that these are only temperatures for the lower 48 states, but lying by omission is a common global warming denier tactic (just look at the Swindle for examples).

In fact from the very page Jello linked:

"In the global mean, 2005 remains the warmest (as in the NCDC analysis). CRU has 1998 as the warmest year but there are differences in methodology, particularly concerning the Arctic (extrapolated in GISTEMP, not included in CRU) which is a big part of recent global warmth. No recent IPCC statements or conclusions are affected in the slightest."

So to answer your question, the only way to show that 1934 was hotter than 1998 is to lie by omission. Yet global warming deniers like Jello have been corrected several times:

and continue to spread the misinformation anyway. Although a few times Jello has responded to the correction by saying "look it was the hottest year in Helsinki, too!". Sheesh.
