I've heard some atheists say that God is fictional and just an explaination for things that we can't yet understand. What if there are some things that humans can never understand? Things that we are absolutely incapable of ever knowing...even in principle. Does that mean that there will always be a place for the god of the gaps? What if there are some things that can only be understood in a religious context?

Our understanding will always be limited.
Science has its own unique purpose in searching
the natural universe.
God gave us inquiry/curiosity as a unique gift.
Seeking out God is seeking the spiritual realm,
the eternity beyond, science does not do that
and can not do that.
God speaks to my heart and gives me directions
that work out that science could not ever provide.
Sure, science has disproved some superstitions,
but the Bible actually teaches us to not follow
mere superstitions, but follow God!
There would be no thought or logic without
God - we were made from the dust of the
ground and God also breathed life into us
(our soul/spirit) - so we are not merely dust
of the earth.
Religion without science is lame,
science without religion is pointless.

First of all, there is no such thing as god. People may use the idea of god to rationalize things that they don't understand, but that doesn't make it real. If I believe that a flying pig is responsible for the random mutation of DNA molecules, that doesn't make it true.

Secondly, I do believe that due to our limted perspective, there are somethings that we may never understand... Although I could be wrong... Physicist have used mathematics to prove that the universe we live in contains as many as 11 dimensions, but we will never really understand what that might look like from a geometrical standpoint.

Like what? What can be only understood in a religious context?

God does NOT equal religion!!!!!

Maybe humans need a god to answer the answerable questions. Maybe there is a God. I am not sure.

basically true, with the following reservations:
1. even when there is a clear explanation, people will stick to their beliefs, despite all evidence to the contrary.
2. with the list of things we do not understand so much changed from what people understood 3-2 millennium ago, the whole concept of what God is needs to be modified to an extent, which makes the whole idea of God superfluous.

Yes. A delusional explanation however. There are many things that we will never understand. If that is ever not the case, there will be no need for science. Which of course the faithful who feel that they understand everything already use as an argument.

One of the larger problems with the god of the cracks is it gets wedged in so tightly as to block those cracks from being closed. Meaning, religion vigorously opposes scientific explanations for as long as possible in order to hang on to their own "explanation for things we can't yet understand" (god). Just look at the modern creation vs. evolution debate, stem cell research, or the plight of Galileo when he took the Earth from the center of the Universe.

I've never inserted God in the gaps or used God as an explaination for what is not known or understood.

I know God exists from my own direct personal experience...God is an indescribable intelligence and love that can be experienced.

Its an explaination for things some people can't understand anyway. Being a mathematician, I think I understand things a little better than most. To some people, boiling macaroni, seems to be beyond their comprehension.

No understanding something and thinking that something can never be understood is a foolish mistake.

And just because something is not understood it in no way makes any sense to just attribute it to some Magic Man

Remember, "god" is actually nothing more than a nonsense word created by man to explain away all of the things we can't yet understand.
