Referring to your question, I don't know what could cause this. However, I, too, have a similar problem. I have had pain in my neck in the thyroid area for about 10 weeks. It hurts more when I am tired, and I feel it more strongly when I yawn. I have a small nodule on my thyroid, which was biopsied last week and I didn't get the results yet, but the doctor thought it would be benign. I, too, have heard from well meaning medical people and others who say that the thyroid doesn't hurt, which is frustrating to me. I googled "thyroid pain" and found some information on thyroiditis, which can cause thryoid pain. (It can have various causes, including viral.) However, it usually causes changes in hormone levels, and my levels are normal. If you are still experiencing thyroid pain, you might want to look up "thyroid pain" and see if any of the info you find matches your symptoms.

you shouldn't feel pain in your thyroid.
you might have a swollen lymph node in that area.
if it continues for more than a few days, then go to your doctor if you are concerned.
even if you had thyroid cancer, that itself is not painful.
you are probably ok.

You might have swollen glands. Maybe you have a virus or infection. Or maybe you pulled a muscle.
