I'm studying overseas (in Australia) and my mum's turning 50 in October. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a gift that I could send back home to her and won't break in transit.
I'm definately going to call her on her birthday and I'm planning on making her a birthday card.
She likes 'Old-Fashioned' things, enjoys classic movies, loves handbags. The only problem is that she has dozens of things like that already!
I just feel that I should get her something special for her 50th!

HELP!!

There is nothing you can buy her that she couldn't buy herself or hasn't bought already. Mothers love it when you make them something. Something you can't get on sale somewhere 1/2 off. Get some old goofy family photos, the goofier the better, or just take a bunch of goofy photos of yourself, since you're away, glue them to a box,or picture frame or a piece of cardboard, anything, something she might use or see everyday, get creative. She will love so much that you took time out of your busy life to do this for her.Especially since you're away from home She will have a part of you to look at and feel a little closer to ... and show off to her friends. Believe me... it will be the best money you "never" spent.

Turning 50 is a milestone. It can also be hard on a woman. A really great gift would be a gift certificate to a spa where she could have a day of pampering. After years of being a wife & mother, she has spent a lifetime taking care of other people. Giving her a day just for herself would be one the best things you could do for her. Getting a massage, having her hair & nails done, toes too, would let her know how much you appreciate her & how much you love her, & how much you want her to enjoy her birthday. I think she is a lucky mother. Good Luck & Blessings

Hi , for my mother-in-laws 50th bday , her kids i.e. my husband and his sister had planned a get together with gifts etc. Since i found that too ususal , I made a huge card and asked every member of the family to write down a small appreciative note about how my mother-in-law has contributed to their lives .....everyone got excited and the list grew and grew and grew...... The look on her face as we read out loud this card after the cake cutting n gift giving was worth a million dollars !! Needless to mention she treasures this memoir more than any material gift she ever received ( it even overshadowed the diamond set my father-in-law gifted her that day !!! )

Maybe u can procure such notes from all the members of ur family through e-mail and compile them together and print it on her card or something.......it sure wont break in transit !!

For my mom's 60th bday im planning to make a quilt with all our baby n growing up snaps printed and stitched on to it . Hope this helps

Very good! Can someone help you get it all on a disk and present a slide show during the party? Also be sure to have a guest book for everyone to write notes in for her. Better yet - I just saw this last weekend: get a really large matted picture frame. Take the glass out temporarily. Leave the center space open for a photo taken at the party. Keep the matted frame a colorful pens on a table and encourage everyone at the party to write a note to your mom. After the party you insert the best picture from the celebration and put the glass back in. What a cool keepsake!

I wouldn't pass up on the chance to purchase aboriginal art, or maybe you could find and frame a ship manifesto or other type of document from the Australian settlers. You're there and it's different. Personally, I'd love a boomerang LOL I hope you're enjoying yourself. What an opportunity for you!

Gift certificate to Amazon or Overstock, you can set it up right online and even send her an ecard announcing it(mail her a real card too). That allows her to show for what she wants and its great fun to pick things out and then get them in the mail.

Is there any way you can arrange for a spa day for her and a companion of her choice?

Do you have retro shops there where you can get an antique shawl? She may have other "old fashioned" things, but something new from Australia might be cool.

Antique earrings or bracelet?

Something gold and small like a jewelry will do, i think,
or if you think it is too costly. Why don't you call up a bake shop in your mom's place and order her a cake and make them deliver it to her , you may also include some flowers.

She would want you to come home. Go see her at all cost.
An old fashioned lady wants her baby home for her birthday.
