If we have a belief in God, ultimately that knowledge of good must have been put into our brains by Him. The desire to do good then has the authority of God.

Without God, we are left with just feelings. If we pursue feelings just to get the feelings, then evil can happen because there is no reality behind the feelings and therefore no way to judge between competing feelings.
