The use of chlorine in town tap water is used to ensure that dangerous bacteria and organisms are killed prior to human consumption. However, once this is achieved, it's fine to filter out the chlorine before drinking. Some believe chlorine does have harmful effects on the body for IBS sufferers (see http://www.cfsn.com/ibs.html ) and as a cancer risk (see http://www.pure-earth.com/chlorine.html ). However, the conventional view is that chlorine use withing acceptable amounts is safe. However, who knows whether future studies will show harmful health effects of chlorine in water. So it may be good to remove the chlorine as a precautionary measure.

Although the exact cause of IBS is not known, some research suggests that a bacterial infection can sometimes trigger it (see http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/Irritable_bowel_syndrome.html ), so it may be beneficial to drink water that has been properly treated or filtered to further reduce exposure to harmful organisms. You need to check the filter you buy carefully to see what substances it filters out.

IBS sufferers should also stay well hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses of water. Filtering your water and improving quality and taste will encourage you to drink enough water each day, see http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/ibs

Here is a good portable water bottle that filters to 0.1 micron and also adds minerals back into the water, http://www.topbuys.com.au/waterman-portable-ioniser-filter-waterman.aspx However, you should check with your doctor before you try anything new like this.

IBS is not caused by chlorine in the water. It is caused by an imbalance of the fluids secreted in your intestine. When there is diarrhea your body is letting go too much water and when you are constipated your body is not letting go enough water. The best thing believe it or not is fiber for IBS symptoms. The fiber binds to the water in diarrhea and it also helps with constipation. Also IBS is a long time problem for those that suffer from it. It is not a one time episode. Good luck.
