Why pull a sickie? Tell them the truth, explain it's a one off and you're really stuck, and ask if you can take it as a days holiday (in advance if you don't have any owing). Unless you have a completely heartless boss you should be ok.

I would most definately pull a sickie.
I once worked in a shop (I worked there for 3 years when this happened), and I needed a day off to go to a FUNERAL and I had to provide evidence that the person was in fact dead (showed the obituary in local paper), and had to convince them that I was closely related. It was ridiculous. In the end I only got a half day as it was.
Don't listen to people who say tell the truth, as the retail industry in my experience are not as compassionate as other industries. most other professions if you are off for a day your work is just waiting for you when you get back, but in shops, they need to cover you (the customers will not be waiting for you to get back!!!), and they hate doing that unless they have to. They would rather you were homeless and still coming to work, then them having to arrange someone to come in to work. If you phone in sick, the manager will step in, but he wouldn't offer to cover for you in a personal emergency.
UNLESS, the other way is to see if anyone will swap shifts with you, this has worked for me in the past also.

Don't lie! C'mon...you're in the workplace now. Be an adult. Simply go to your boss and let them know that you have a 'personal' issue that you need to take care of. Enough said. That's not a lie either. By the way, g'luck.

Many, many options... It depends on your situation. Here's what I found:
-If your boss is a male, use your menstrual cycles to your advantage.
-Don't make an excuse, just plain out say you are not coming in and taking a sick day; otherwise, you are just lying to say you are sick. This way, you can technically say you were telling the truth if your boss finds out you weren't actually sick.
-My cat unplugged my alarm clock.
-I hurt myself bowling.
-I was sprayed by a skunk.
-My monkey died.

Just say you have a family emergency, that way they cant say no and they cant ask any questions. Plus you don't have to put on the fake sick voice over the phone.
Good luck xxx

I don't think you should lie, what if you are out and someone sees you and says you weren't sick? Lies come back to bite you, tell the truth and most bosses are pretty decent if you have family issues.
