Chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) is a cancer of white blood cells in which too many white blood cells are made in the bone marrow. Chronic myelogenous leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia are other names for CML and refer to the identical disease. Depending on the type of white blood cell that is involved, chronic leukemia can be classified as chronic lymphocytic leukemia or chronic myelocytic leukemia. In chronic myelocytic leukemia, there is an increased proliferation of white blood cells called granulocytes.

Various anticancer therapies are used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). They include high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplantation, standard chemotherapy and targeted cancer treatments. Learn what options people are using today and what new therapies are on the horizon.

Most people respond well to CML therapy with few side effects. But at times, medications used to treat this disease can cause side effects, or stop working. Learn why side effects and drug resistance occur in some people and what strategies are recommended to deal with them.

The patient should be careful about infections spread through food brought from stores and shops, otherwise there is not much of restrictions of foods. If any food is to be restricted the Oncologist will give a diet chart and he has to strictly observe it. There is no other general pre-cautions. -

Well, CML is one of the rarer kinds of leukemia. It effects white blood cells, and is chronic (hence the name) which means it takes longer to cure. This however means the treatment for it it less intense than it is for an acute type. If it's caught in the chronic stage (which it is often) if the patient is not allergic to the Gleevec drug, that would be administered. It's has around a 90% cure rate if it works well, and is a simple pill (though it does have side effects, possibly, like nasuea and throwing up, or feeling weak) In addition to that (or as a substitute) regular chemotherapy, (either IV or in a pill) might be given, this has many possible side effects, depending on the kind. You could lose your hair, get very sick, you'll be prone to illnesses, and be weak. The only cure for CML however is a bone marrow, or stem cell transplant. This could be from an allogenic donor (from a brother or sister, someone related) or a non related donor (those have higher risk factors though) These are dangerous, and you'd need to be in isolation, because you'll have no immune system what so ever. But, they work a lot of the time, and then you'd be in total remission eventually with a cure.
