He's a 16 week old Border Collie pup, and this morning there appeared to be a swelling on the sie of his face, not too big but noticable. I want to know what it is and if it'll go away because I want to try and avoid the vets at all costs!

Most likely he will have been stung or bitten by something. Young puppies are very inquisitive. If it does not go down in a few days i would see a vet or if your dog seems to be showing any sign of sickness. e.g. lethargic, trouble breathing, throwing up etc

How are we supposed to know? We don't know your dog, it's medical history, what's happened to it in the last few day or even see the lump. Jeez, some people. And 'avoid the vet at all costs', you should be ashamed of yourself. Why would you not want to take your dog to the vet for proper medical treatment? Do you know that that is considered animal cruelty as you are not providing the correct care and treatment for your pet (part of the five freedoms)? You are clueless, take your dog to the vet and don't be so cruel. If you had a swelling on your face, i bet you'd be on the phone to the doctor first thing. It is not acceptable to treat your dog like this. Do the poor thing a favour and take it to Dogs Trust and let them find it the new, loving home that it deserves.

Edit: I have just looked at your profile and other questions/answers - are you 14? If so, then it will not be your choice whether or not your dog goes to the vet. Let's hope the adult in your household is more sensible.

It may be a little inflammation caused by a lot of things (a bug's bite, an object-like a rusty nail etc.)

If the reason is bee and the sting is still there it may cause an infection. But I should say that you must see a vet. There are so many reasons cause a swelling that only a proper medical examination can reveal it and you should get the correct treatment. Otherwise whatever you do is pointless unless you apply the correct treatment.

Long time back my dog face got hit by a closing door, he got swelling on both side of face. I think your dog may have got hit by some object & developed that swelling. Keep a watch on it, also press it & see if its painful incase the dog reacts. if it doesn't subsides after 3-4 days get him examined from vet.

It could be an insect bite, or it could be a dental problem. I understand how costly vets can be, do have an RSPCA surgery near you?
It would be worth getting him checked if the swelling doesn't go down in the next 24hrs.

once my mum's dogs face swelled up it was because a bee stung it .it got over it by its self. if not a bee maybe an ant bite it. like humans different dogs react differently to different things

Nobody can possibly diagnose what is wrong with dog without even seeing him.
If youare not willing to pay vet's bills you should either insure him or you shouldn't have a dog!
