I'm good friends with this lass of the same age and we both want to enter the same profession. We have similar goals in life and I have often discussed this with her when I've been out with her and a few mates. We seem to like each other a great deal and I'm just wondering whether I should, and if so how I should, ask her out?

find a way to be out with her on her own.
from the way you talk i'd say you're a gentleman, and act like one on the date. be polite, offer to buy her a drink. just get chatting and talk the night away.
at the end of the night just say you had an excellent time and would she like to do it again sometime?

go like "hey wanna go grab lunch together?" or "do you want to go watch a movie with me some time?"

Ask her to do somthing with you that you both like. And tell her how you feel then ask her how she feels.
