A really good school friend of mine is leaving home for the navy and after a few years training, going on to the marines.

Is it going to be the same friend i know that comes home on shore leave?

Your friend will change. There would be a change no matter what branch he decided to join. If the two of you are friends, then that friendship should remain in place. Due to joining the military, he will walk a different path than you.

I have been in the Navy for over 18 years. I still visit and hang out with friends I had in high school and in college. We all still respect one another. My opinion is my opinion, and their opinions are their opinions. A good friendship will go the distance as long as both of you exercise the friendship and keep in touch.

Yes and no. He will always be the person you grew up with. You will always have the memories, and hopefully the friendship. But all people change. People grow. He will visit lots of places, and do things most people never do. There is a good possibility he could go to war. Sometimes that changes people, and sometimes it doesn't. It all depends on how he processes the stress. The core of him will never change. He is who he is. His life experiences will be much different from someone who is not in the military though. Just respect and appreciate his choice. People can always learn things from each other. Oh, and remember to write him where ever he may be. They need that kind of support.

i think of you ought to examine what you like to get into plenty greater. you're saying some issues that make no experience or are incorrect such as you getting E3 after boot camp. And having a level potential you may attempt out to become an officer, if it fairly is what you like. merely because you may get a level, does no longer propose you ought to attempt to become an officer. Enlisted and officer are 2 very dissimilar issues a similar way the army and USMC are 2 very diverse animals. you do not get plenty for being a level holder in case you enlist into the USMC. except you be attentive to what the USMC is all approximately and how it operates, then i desire to advise you reside removed from it. It merely isn't for each individual. And in case you do no longer desire to place any pointless tension on your relationship, then no longer growing to be a member of could be a stable element.

The biggest change I went through in the Navy is that I grew up.

People change over time regardless what they do. The problem is you may not be able to relate to him or not have anything in common to talk about when he does come home.

I don't think it will change him, just his perception of things will be shifted slightly, and its up to him how he takes to the new paradigm shift.
Its hard to say whether he'll be the same friend that he was when he left, but since he's a good school friend I doubt it.

he probably will be the same friend, but with more life experience.
all experiences that we have affect us, and change us a little, but it doesn't mean we won't be friends with the people we knew before
