I'm from the states. i have been to Thailand 5 times. I go there for vacation every 3 or 4 months now. I mostly travel through all the provinces, and surrounding countries trying to see all i can. It seems the only women i meet are the usual bar girls and i don't even hang out in bars, and approaching a "normal" girl or finding one just to strike conversation with doesn't seem to happen too often. I'm not looking for a dream girl, a wife, or a girl for one night or anything like that, but just to talk to someone or hang out with someone, and get to know them a little while i'm there would be nice. Any help, clues, hints?

Maybe "Normal" isn't the best term. How about, conservative. And when i use the term "Bargirl" I'm not necessarily talking about a prostitute. I get approached quite a bit while i'm there by girls who are not i guess necessarily "Bargirls" They just aren't as conservative as i'd like.

Normal girl means you have to do your homework to get to know them too, man.

How you make friend in your country?

It's the same way to get to know normal Thai girl who is not approach you for personal gain.

Normal, regular girls (Not bar girl) will not approach you unless there is some incident happen.

For example, you see a girl on a bus. She's holding a lot of stuffs and you offer some help to her.

Most regular girls will not talk or go out with foreigners that easily because most foreigners see all Thai girls as prostitutes. They kinds of beware themself. They don't want others to see them as prostitutes.

If you really want to know a normal Thai girl, you have to work hard.

However, for your short period of staying most foreigners will end up with bar girls anyway. They don't have time to really get to know someone.

That's one of the most reason why most foreigners are cheated by Thai bar girls. Pity them, but they deserve it.

Suthichai S has it pegged pretty much. I have been to Thailand 10 times, though mostly in Bangkok. I have made friends with some of the women, non-bargirls. And there are times when I don't have a date, I can call one of them and go out for dinner. Your true Thai non-bargirl is about as easy to meet as they are here in the US. Thai women are very conservative and somewhat watchful of the farang.

The ones I have met have been through a dating service www.thailovelinks.com, most ladies are not your average Thai since they are looking abroad to meet someone or at least talk to someone. At least you know they are willing. You still have to be watchful of the bargirl type. I would try it for 3 months prior to your next trip. It may cost you $20-30 for the effort but, you might make a few friends. Plus you know they can speak english, or at least write some. There are thai-english translation programs there. Meet them in a public place and you can find out the preliminaries before you arrive. It will make your trip a bit more pleasurable, they may even show you around.

Another site is www.faceparty.com, here you really have to watch out for bargirl types. Free site from the UK. I don't even remember how I found it.

I have tried a few and the Thai Love Links has produced the better results. www.asiafriendfinder.com is not so good, at least a year ago they did not have that many Thai women.

In Bangkok try the discos, Q-bar or similar bars where there are cover charges and be discerning, find the higher class lady. Or you can try the malls or market places.

I usually go with meetings arranged though they don't always turn out that way. I still end up meeting friends sometimes. The ladies get cold feet.

Keep in mind that english is taught by rote up to about the 6th grade. So, if they speak english well, then its because their business or job requires it or they have a high interest in finding someone who speaks english.

Good luck.

Isaan , N/E Thailand . Khon Kaen is a very good centre , with many nice women eager to meet you , who are clean respectable women , not bar girls . You just need to keep your eyes open and smile when they smile at you . They may come up to you and ask where you are from etc . They may like a little more than conversation ; buy them some gold and they will show you all sorts of favours . If at the end of your holiday you have liked them ; you can send them some money , say $300 (+) a month and she will be there for you next time you come .
Another good place to go is Kranuan , a small town in the province of Khon Kaen , easily reachable by bus .
You can stay at Castle Howchow , a resort with magnificent swimming pool , on the edge of Kranuan ; owned by Englishman Howard Rosco . I'm sure you will find it on the internet .
I am married to a woman from this part of Thailand , where many people are very poor . Women are clean honest and straight forward , many are very attractive and pretty ; people of the N/E are the ones who smile . They are looking for a kind , generous man , who will help to look after them a bit . In all the rural villages there are women and girls , dying to meet a nice
" Falang " foreigner . Age is not a barrier , even looks and obesity can be overlooked if the man is kind and generous .
I am told bar girls are often greedy and deceptive , dishonest . Isaan girls who have not been to " South of Thailand " , have not got tainted in that way .

You've gotten several great responses and a good link from African Farmer too! Suthichai S, gbdelta 1954 are also on track.

Cheack out African Farmers link and read it all the way. Meeting Thai girls is not hard. Being in a relationship and meeting her parents is not easy. What you seem to be looking for in Thai culture is a challenge.

There are a lot of girls at the University in Bangkok that have western boyfriends from time to time but they will never let their partents know. Don't think that this is some 1950's forbidden love thing either where she's all chaste and just waiting for the right time for the world to see your love as special and tell her parents. She often has a Thai boyfriend too that her parents do know about but they probably only go out in 3's with her aunt or Mom's friend as well. that way she will be a virgin when they get married...

I'm not being hard on them they are human and they are only a small part of the example. I love Thai culture and my only popint really is that you have just started visiting the kingdom and (respectfully) may not have been exposed enough of the very intricate Thai social customs to be as successful as you'd like yet. Getting to know a "good girl" in Thailand is not hard but you may need to learn a good deal more about how she looks at the world and how you may view it differently before you find what you are looking for. Since you go there a lot go into Asia Books and read some of their getting to know the Thais books like: "The Thai & I", Or "Living and working in Thailand" These are a great start.

It is very easy to meet and go out with "good girls" in Bangkok the challenge is to move beyond that if that is your goal. Beyond that I'm assuming is a long term relationship. To do that you might take some time as I've suggested to learn more abotu thai culture, values and likes and dislikes. Thais are a wonderful but complex people and they can be fickle so it is very important to learn as much as you can so as to avoid bursting into flames...

Also you might not be so concerned about the BG's. If you are respectful and kind they can teach you an awful lot about Thai culture and a lady's expectations in the Kingdom. Most as you know are not hard hearted. I won't opine on that last bit as I'll get flammed but they are generally sweet and harmless as long as you are careful to set your boundaries and do so warmly.

guess one of the best ways I have found is to just meet up with people. Not just Women.

I have pick up a little of the thai language from my travels there and from some books on speaking thai. Whenever I can I would just strike up a conversation with someone in a coffee shop, or disco etc they could be guys as well. My logic is simple ... put in the effort to really know someone and over time it will pay off.

To the thais (and people in most countries) someone from another land is often interesting and especially so if he/she is trying to learn our culture or speak our language. They would love to get to know you better.

Over time you will start to meet up with their friends etc and thats when you will meet ' normal ' girls. These guy friends you have may even vouch for you as being a good friend and not out just to try a one niter.

Just try it ... dont just hit on the women; be nice and try to get to know everyone.

Good luck!

ok - do you speak any Thai? Maybe you should learn first and then you will be able to talk with everyone - Thai people are very engaging and I find it easy to talk with almost anyone - they are curious and like to talk with westerners, especially so in the provinces.. smile alot - and go talk with bar girls too - buy them a drink and just sit and talk if you want - most will open up to you quickly, pardon the pun, but they are just mostly poor girls who have come down from the villages anyway - see past the job.. office buildings are full of young thai ladies who would like to make a friend - I get approached all the time, mostly from people who just want to say hello and talk a little - - good luck.

Dude, did you know most normal Thai women don't speak English? So for your requirement of just chatting & get to know the country around either your hotel guest attendant or tourist guides can provide you that or u can learn to speak Siamese or bits of Chinese.

Thai. girls are mostly conversative, so for a tourist to suddenly approach them that's like.... imagine...a Middle Eastern with their turban on approaching a group of white Americans & trying to be friendly with them. Chances of getting a "friendly factor" on the scale of 1-10 it's almost like 1-2? (not to discriminate but get the picture?)

It's not that Thai. ppl. ain't friendly but mostly are shy.
While those who are more outspoken & fluent in basic English in normal average society there are those in tourism, marketing field which involves bar, beach + etc.

Its more difficult to find a non-prostitute girl, also because many families will lose face if their daughters find foreign husbands.
Thai like Thai - so easy.
But be friends with some Thais - and then take it easy. Try learn to speak Thai is a real good way to be accepted.

Sign up to a contact site such as 'Thai Love Links' and post your profile. Lots of girls just want to be friends and improve their English. I had about 20 penpals until I sparked with someone special. Good Luck !

Try to go to shopping malls, outdoor markets, bus stops, university campuses etc ... places with plenty of people and thus many females. Then you are bound to meet some that are"normal".

If you've only met BGs then that is a reflection of where you are going to meet people.
