Ray H has a great answer but, if that doesn't work remember this. All of the training in the world won’t make a darn bit of difference unless you have the will to use it.
If a physical confrontation arises you must be prepared to use explosive violence and overwhelm your opponent. Most fights wind up on the ground so, some wrestling/jujitsu will certainly assist. Learn how to manipulate your opponent on the ground to gain and maintain the advantage.
High kicks usually will do nothing more than get you knocked to the ground. If you are going to throw kicks keep em’ low. Thigh area, kidneys, front kicks to the stomach.
If you feel your life is truly in danger then there is no such thing as a fair fight. Punch to the throat, gouge the eyes do whatever you must do to survive.

As others have already mentioned that avoidance and awareness are the best forms of self-defense there is, I will tell you that if you are interested in self-defense and self-defense only, martial arts is not for you. You need to find a class that is devoted solely to self-defense. Quite frankly, the local police department probably is a better place to look at than the stripmall dojo across the street.

The best self defense you can learn is to be self aware. To be aware of your surroundings, and everything in your proximity. If you know what is happening you can avoid problems. True self defense.

One that is effective in a real situation is the one that is best to learn.
There is no style better than any other style.
The quality and frequency of your training far outweighs the style you train in.
Look for a good school, not a good style.

Avoid the punch.
My favorite method is to be at home having a nice cup of tea while some idiot at the bar across town is starting a fight.

Not to put yourself in a situation where you may need to fight, that's the best thing you can learn.
