That's a tough question. Both fire 12 gauge shells. One is a semi auto, one is a pump. The Benelli will have less recoil and fire faster than the Mossberg 500. The Benelli also has adjustable sights, but it's almost double the price. Also with a new Benelli 1014 it may not cycle lower recoil shells such as bird shot. The pump will feed anything you put through it as long as you don't short stroke the pump.

Pump's require two hands to operate and are harder to operate from the prone position.

Since your goal is to find a platform to fire 12 gauge shells you have a lot of options. Unless you are hung up on looks a good hunting 12 gauge can be accessorized into a very capable home defense shotgun. For example an 11-87 with 21", smooth bore, rifle sighted barrel, and interchangeable chokes and mag extension will give you as much capability as the Benelli with money left over.

It's a choice you will have to make. I personally won't spend that much money on a single purpose, single use firearm, when there are so many other options available. Not that the 1014/M4 isn't a great shotgun. But it's not perfect either.

The Mossberg 500 is a good shotgun for a fair price. Even with it the fixed sights do not allow for adjustment that will give you the ability to send slugs 75 - 100yds with the right slug-choke combination. If it's not an adjustable choke you are stuck with improved cylinder which limits the effective range of buckshot to 20-25yds or the distance at which you can keep all your pellets on a silhouette. Even with it I would buy a good hunting shotgun, for skeet, trap, birds, rabbits, squirrels, deer and then switch barrels and magazine extension to my home defense shotgun.

A lot of the people will tell you to go with the Benelli just because of the name. I own a Mossberg and really enjoy it. It's a very good all-around brand. The military has used Mossbergs for years. For your first shotgun, it would be good. However, for primary home defense, a semi-automatic pistol would be better.

IF there's no problem with the budget, personally I'd go for the benelli M4.
DO you really need a folding/collapsing butt on the gun? Another option for me would be the Benelli M3, simply because it has a more solid feel of the gun...
Budget wise tough the Mossberg isn't a bad choice either.
NOTE: The Benelli's fire semi-auto & pump while the Mossberg is pump action only....
