Shouldn't they be more concerned at how they treat others? And whether their religion, or no religion, helps or hinders them being good to others.

It is because they do not understand morality.

Morality or the lack thereof is only displayed when people believe that no one is watching them. You can't bribe or coerce someone into morality.

Since theists believe that God is always watching them and judging them on their actions, they have no occasion in life to base a decision on morality. They simply do not understand the concept of morality and try to convince everyone else to believe in their God so that they will also believe in his bribes and coercion.

If God does exist, he is either almighty, omniscient, and benevolent, or not. If he does possess all those qualities, he would not want to be worshiped. If he doesn't possess them, then he should not be worshiped.

In the end, the existence of God is completely irrelevant.

Logic and empathy are the basis of morality, not the dictates of ancient mythology.

Well I think they probably should be. You can either have as some would put it "no fun" by following a religions laws, only to die and find out it was all for nothing or be sure there is no God and live how they want and then suffer eternal damnation. I personally believe in God but to be a true follower you need to treat others really well. Like that verse I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink etc. and it goes on about serving your fellow man as if it were christ.

People use belief in god to justify some pretty barbaric attitudes, prejudices and ways of treating others. Without god these practices are wholly indefensible and easily considered - in the language they would use - evil. With god they can just say "he told me to do it".

Here are some examples:
1. sectarian terrorisim in Northern Ireland - responsible for far more deaths in the UK than Al Quaida
2. Islamic fundamentalis, responsible for countless acts of brutality
3. homophobia - did you know the man who won world war 2 for the allies and invented the computer was killed by the state for being gay

Because their instinct says nothing about the existence of a god.... so the bible's words have free reign there.

On the other hand, how the bible claims other people should be treated, where it opposes animal nature, has effectively been cast by the wayside.
If you want to know how animal nature decrees others should be treated...... well.... Go hang around an african savannah awhile and watch.

You are very wise to say so.

Personally as I lost my faith in God I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't change one bit from when I was a believer and thus I realized that the WAY I lived had little to do with my beliefs.

It really is how we treat each other that matters.

I sometimes argue the existence of God because religious people often accuse atheists of being selfish immoral fools who just can't open their hearts to Jesus.

your point is the main focus of my outlook as well . we only pass this way once we cannot act in the past or the future but all our well learned intellect has but a small chance to act in the present for the changes that are required to make the world a place of peace love and happiness for all .

Because that is the most important question there is? there is nothing more important? I know there is because I have experienced God the Father Jesus and the Holy Spirit but if a person hasn't then that would be my greatest question? Is there a God and Is there and afterlife.People want to live on .

They have this concern because God created man, he will have the urge within him until he finds God, only then his soul gets satisfaction in the earth.
