I have a 16 year old cat, and we get two kittens about 3 years ago(their sisters) And one of them always hisses or trys to attack my old cat. she has stopped this now, but now my old cat hisses or moans(like a growling, haha) When she comes on the room. But i always say to puss puss (my old cat) No, leave her shes not annoying you, and its like she understands, cause she sits back down again. Also, i ask her something like, do you want to go outside? (like before im going to go to bed, just in case she needs to go outside to go toilet) and shell either walk over to the door for me to open it, or she will go off to where she likes to sleep. also, we have french doors, and my other cat will lean up again the door and like make knocking noises against the door, like shes knocking on the door to come in

My cat is 3 years old. He's very smart. Also knocks on the door to come in or go out. My other cat she is 4 months old and she is smart, when I call her name she will come to me. Or if they fight I tell them to behave and they will. Maybe they have multiple personalities. I can relate!

what I know is that cats are very smart animals. I once read an article that a cat can memorize up to 20 words. My cats understand me very well. In my opinion i think that facial expressions and the tone of voice used when you speak to your cat plays a big role with your cat understanding you.

I'm not sure cats understand our words, but they can understand the tone of voice we use and know what time of day it is. They know what they want and whatever works for them to get it, they'll keep doing it. Sometimes I think it's the cat training us, instead of us training the cat.

Considering youve had her for a long time, im sure it's used to you saying that stuff already. Kinda like a cat getting used to its name. It hears it overs and overs again.

I think they can by the tone of your voice and also they can probably understand face expressions because I have a deaf cat and its like she can tell how people are feeling. Like she can tell when you get mad at her and when your upset..

i believe cats understand, my daughters cat knew when you would talk about catnip, she ( nermal ) would go where it was located and she would meow until you gave her some.
it did not matter if you spelled the words out. she had the same reaction with wet food or sayn " your moms home".
she would also tell my daughter when it was time for bed.

They understand everything, after a certain time they have been with us. when they don't do as we tell them is not because they didn't understand, but because they wanted to do something else. That's the difference with dogs: dogs will do what you want, as long as you can make them understand.
