In the past I've had dreams about being in a large room or house,
((The symbolic "house" is you..... The room is an area within the self which has stored the "story" to which this message is contained.... But, what room is this?....))
usually set in the nighttime,
((the night is darkness, of course... However, as there is little light available, it means that you cannot "see" clearly..... Therefore, the symbolic night time, indicates that you do not have much understanding to which the message pertains....))
and I am running around trying to close the doors
((Dream says that you are attempting to put an end to something.... to shut something or someone out..... close doors to make sure that nothing remains open to others or the elements......))
and windows
((Windows are symbolic of the eyes because we must peer out of them in order to view the outside world. Trying to close windows is an attempt to keep from seeing or viewing something......))
because I know something is outside trying to get in.
((Dream says you are doing so for protection....))
What's terrifying about these dreams is that the windows or doors usually do not close for several reasons
((Okay.....Keep in mind that doors are like unto passageways. They allow passage into a symbolic room from one place and into this other....Dream says there is a reason... ))
door is too small for frame,
((This reason is that the means is not large enough to keep closed...... ))
window is only half the right size
((point of view is not right.... only half right....))
In otherwords, there is always a reason why you cannot keep this symbolic "door" shut.... It is also your point of view and you don't want to see it coming.... so, the dream says you shut your eyes, or rather, close yourself off from others..... There is also something you do not understand, but for some reason, the door is always open to those whom you do not want to become involved.... and they keep trying..... as you said, "someone/something is trying to get in.....

Your dream is usually what we call a fear dream. The doors and windows not being the right size represents this. You are trying to close the window and door of opportunity to the fears that are trying to over take you. But the reason the windows and door are not the right size is because. The methods that you are using to deal with your fears leaves too much of a gap and does not fit for what is needed.

According to Dreamcrowd:
To dream that you are entering through a door, signifies new opportunities that will be presented before you. You are entering into a new stage in your life and moving from one level of consciousness to another. In particular, a door that opens to the outside, signifies your need to be more accessible to others, whereas a door that opens into the inside, denotes your desire for inner exploration and self-discovery. To see opened doors in your dream, symbolizes your receptiveness and willingness to accept new ideas/concepts. In particular, to see a light behind it suggests that you are moving toward greater enlightenment/spirituality. To dream that the doors are locked, signifies opportunities that are denied and not available to you or that you have missed out on. In particular, if you are outside the locked door, then it suggests that you are having some anti-social tendencies. If you are inside the locked door, then it represents harsh lessons that need to be learned. To dream that you are locking doors, suggests that you are closing yourself off from others. You are hesitant in letting others in and revealing your feelings. It is indicative of some fear and low self-worth. To see revolving doors in your dream, suggests that you are literally moving in circles and going no where. You may feel that your opportunities and choices lead to a dead end.
To see a window washer in your dream, represents your ability to clarify a situation and shed some perspective on an issue.

It could mean that your sub conscience isn't giving closure to certain issues you may have had to deal with currently or in your past something that may have been bothering you.
