I am a breeder, I never sell to brokers (people who buy puppies from breeders, then resale to pet stores). For one thing I raise show quality Yorkies, so most are placed in "show homes" only. As far as the shots & worming are concerned, most pet stores don't vaccinate. Vaccinations & wormings are done before by the breeder , required by a broker.I like to meet prospective buyers & know exactly where my puppies will be going. This give me the right to refuse to sell to someone, instead of whoever comes up with the cash first. In return my puppies familes get a guarantee on their puppy, and genetic testing has been done on my dogs. Not to mention a good breeder is always willing to help their puppies owners, and answer any question they have before & after a sale. Pet stores sugar coat things , they know nothing about the breeder, the puppy or its parents. Also, pet store puppy buyers usually buy on impulse. Sometimes they puppy will get dumped at a shelter because the puppies owner didn't educate themseves. You make no sense, do some research on breeders, pet stores ect...

When you buy from a public pet store, you have no idea where your dog came from. He could have come from a flea infested cardboard box in someone's basement for all you know. It could have been cleaned up, given shots purchased at a feed supply store, and sold for hundreds of dollars.
When you buy from a reputable breeder you go to their house and see where your puppy was born. You meet the puppy's parents, and sometimes grandparents. You can ask questions about how the puppy was raised, what kind of socialization was done, what vet did it's shots, ect. You will know the dog's history and family history. You will also have a person, the breeder, to call any time if you have problems. If you cannot keep your dog, you give it back to the breeder and know it will have a good home.
With a pet store dog, you have no idea who bred it. You can't see the parents, no one knows the dogs history, no one will be there to help if something goes wrong. No one will take it back if you can' t keep it. You don't know how or if it was socialized. Many times pet store dogs are taken away from their mothers too soon so they can be shipped to the store and arrive at 8 weeks old. This can cause serious behavior problems.
Better to go with a good breeder or shelter. Better safe than sorry.

shelters are great because they are cheap and you are saving the animal you take and probably another now that there is an extra cage to house another dog. if u dont want to go to a shelter, try an vet clinic. my boyfriends mom works at one and they often have pets that need a home. these pets usually have their shots and and are fixed. it is not expensive and getting it from a vet, u know that it has been checked over and is healthy and u can even ask the vet to tell u about what he/she thought about the dog when they examined it. My bf's mom got a $600 pomeranian for free because it had a heart defect (which they usually grow out of) but the breeder couldnt sell the dog that way. when the vet told the breeder about the condition, he didnt want it and left it at the clinic. u might be able to get a dog like that (or one that isnt the desired color or whose tail curves the wrong way or other unimportant things to a non breeder).
anyway hope that helps!

Dogs that are from SPCA and the shelter are the most healthiest and luckiest, because they have enough space to run, and they got to be checked by the vet regularly, they can eat enough, they got toys to play...... But in the pet shop, no body really cares about the dogs in the cages, I often see some big dogs in a small cage with poos inside but nobody cleaned it up, and when it' s lunch time, they ate like they have never eaten before. And even if they show you the certificate, you can never be sure it' s real or fake, so why don' t you adopt a puppy from the shelter?

Actually, the pet shop dogs are very often ill and poorly bred. The dogs are sick with stuff like kennel cough, and it's not unusual for the pups to have hereditary diseases and problems from inbreeding. Most shops won't let you return the dog, either, and are notorious for refusing to refund money, even in cases when the puppy dies a day later, etc.
Where would I buy a puppy from? Easy- I'd buy it from a rescue, because rescues are nonprofit organizations. They aren't trying to get money, they're trying to find homes for homeless animals. They are cheaper, spay/neuter the dog and vaccinate him. They take care of any health issues. They do not try to hide health problems from you, because if you find out later, you'll just return the dog, and they don't want that. They want you to know so if you adopt him, you'll keep him anyway. I agree with you about dealing with some person I've never met before. But with a 501(c)(3) organization, you can get their financial statements and check out their record easily.
The fact is, if you just want a healthy, happy puppy, the best place to look is a rescue. There are tons of puppies, mixed and purebred, who need homes. Why go buy one from people who trade them like they're not even alive? I see loads of purebred puppies rescued all the time, and when I decide to get another dog, I'll look for him at a rescue, where there are people whose incentives aren't money.

Your kidding me right?
The world would be a better place if there wasn't any puppy mills or pet shops that sales dogs. Did you know thousands of healthy dogs are put to sleep in shelters everyday? Why, because there is a big huge pet over population. I like to thank the puppy millers and backyard breeders for that. The best place to get your dog is from a shelter or a responsible breeder that shows her dogs.
Thease breeders do health testing on the parents, helping to prevent genetic deises that puppies can get. PUPPY MILLERS don't do that.
How can you sleep at night knowing your puppy came from a horrible place and the mom is still sitting in that cold dirty cage and is going to be bred in another month and you profited that puppy miller by buying your dog from that pet store. I sure couldn't because that puppy miller made a few hundread off of you.

A shelter, they have many puppies and the pups have most of their shots (you will need to get more depending on the pups age). Pet store, puppymill, shelter or breeder youre still buying from a stranger. You dont sound like one that is too educated on dogs otherwise you would not be asking this. Get a stuffed animal.

NO NO NO NO and NO!!!!!!! Please do not EVER buy a pup from a pet shop! If you want a dog and don't care what breed it is, PLEASE go to the pound or a shelter. If you want a specific breed, but don't care about its pedigree, please contact a breed rescue (look at akc.org to get you started). If you want a specific breed and you DO care about pedigree (for example, if you plan to show the dog) ... then I BEG you to buy from a reputable breeder.
A reputable breeder has the dog's best interest at heart ... a pet-shop or puppy mill or backyard-breeder is only selling puppies to make a buck.
Responsible dog-breeding is NOT a money-making business. If you buy from a breeder who is committed to the betterment of the breed, you are doing that breed a favor.
If you buy from a pet shop, it is NOT for sure gonna be healthy. It is gonna be almost for sure, a substandard representative of its breed ... Someone will buy that pup and pay wayyyy too much for it ... but don't YOU buy it. Since you asked ... if you are serious about dog ownership, then YOU need to take responsibility for having the pup up-to-date on vet care and vaccinations. If you don't think you can afford vet-care for a pup, then please don't get one.
Sorry, I got a bit off-track ... PLEASE do NOT buy a pup from a pet shop. Two great resources online are akc.org and canismajor ... between them, you can learn everything you'd want to know about breeds, dog ownership, etc ... and they can point you in the right direction. Start there and follow your heart. Good Luck!

That oh so reliable pet shop has no idea what kind of conditions the animals were raised in-watch animal court on Animal Planet sometime to see how many people got pets from a public place only to have them die or become very ill.
Reputable breeders will give you references and credentials. Shelters quarantine, spay or neuter and vaccinate animals before putting them up for adoption, and they have no profit motive to sell you a defective pet, as the adoption fee is just enough to cover running the shelter.

I really find your multiple questions about the SAME thing over and over to be quite annoying. Pet stores that sell puppies get them from puppy mills. Puppy mills are bad. End of story. No they are not healthy...I work in a large vet clinic and we see tons of pet store pups with an assortment of problems, and many of them are quite young to be having these problems. I would trust a breeder that is active in the show ring, their breed club and is trying to better their breed. Just because other people buy from pet stores doesn't mean you have to be stupid and contribute to the support of puppy mills too. Would you go jump off the bridge if "everyone" was doing that too? So stop asking stupid questions over and over, and stop supporting the puppy mills!
