I'm looking for a golf course for me and my stepdad to play at. We're not the best and we can't really kill it. My question is, in terms of yardage, what is considered long? short? for 18 holes.

Just a gut feeling - anything longer than 6600 yards is long for me. Anything less than 5800 yards is short. My regular course is 6100 and that's plenty long enough for me!

Most golf courses have 3 - 6 sets of tee markers to accommodate a variety of golfing skill levels. I would say that anything over 7,200 yards is "long". I am 56 years old and normally shoot high 80's to mid 90's. I look for tee boxes that are 6,500 yards in length or less with a "slope" of 125 or less. I also look at the length of the par 4 holes. I like it when the majority of par 4's are less than 400 yards. Normally, these would be the "Men's" or "White" tee markers. All of this info is contained on the score card. Many courses have websites and the score card can be viewed there.

I think this question is more personal perception than any standard.

I consider any course over 7100 yds. a long course. My regular course is a little over 6900 yds. I start having to hit my long irons into greens after 7100 yards versus hitting 6-pw approaches on a 6900 yard course.

A short course, to me, would be anything less than 6700.
