Is it because it shows how much self control you have? Maybe it's because you dont know how many lovers she had? Or a more primordial reason because it eliminates the chances of her carrying someone's child?

The last thing you want to find out on your wedding night is that your husband requires 2 sheep, a tire iron and a wheel of limburger cheese as "sex aids"

When I look around, I don't see society putting a premium on virginity.

STD's and pregnancy can both be controlled in today's time. If you don't believe it, look at statistics. Yes, there is a lot of teen pregnancy and unplanned parenthood, but that has as much to do with lack of sexual education--and thus not using protection--as it does with anything else. And STD's aren't nearly as prevalent in society as they should be, if you consider the fact that most people have had quite a few sexual partners.

If I met a woman in her 30's (my age), and she were a virgin, I think I would be less likely to court her. Unless she had a reasonable and good reason for being one. "It's a sin" or "It's against my religion" isn't sufficient. That's parrotting the words of others. If she explained why it was against her own moral convictions, that'd be different.

Studies show that the age of first losing virginity, percentage of teens having sex, percentage of single people having sex, etc, have not changed much since the early 1900's. What was open and discussed has changed; statistics showing what is actually occuring in society have not.

I think most people would be surprised to find a 40 year old virgin. Hence the movie. Which supports my theory that society doesn't place a premium on virginity.

Are you stuck in the 1950's or something.

Society in general no longer cares so much about virginity. There are segments of society that do, but generally speaking, virginity is not at such a premium any more.

Primogeniture, an ancient and outmoded way of thinking where women had to be virgin because of the legal right of the eldest child, especially the eldest son, to inherit the entire estate of one or both parents.

Somehow, it has carried over into a religious belief. In these days of DNA testing it is truly an anachronism.

In short, it's remnants from the Victorian Era. Back then, showing ankles or wrists was scandelous. IMHO, the only good things to come out of the Victorian Era happened in spite of the Victorian Era (ie. Oscare Wilde)

Before then was the influence of the Puritans and the Great Awakening. The Puritans were so prude, the English kicked them out. How bad did you have to be back then for That to happen?

Even further back, virginity/monogamy was important to a patriarchal society to be sure that a woman's child was also the child of her husband. This made sure that the paternal lineage was kept in tact for inheritance purposes.

No-no-no-no-no.
It's cos men's egos are so fragile they'd hate to think someone else got there before them and she may then have a clue as to how ba-a-ad the fella is.

Women don't have the same power to be as picky.
Talking about men and it's: sowing his wild oats.
Talking about women and it's: she's a whore.

Weird, eh?
Two sets of rules.
I dunno why women put up with it - I dunno why women are still so subservient; I don't know why women have lost site of the Women's Liberation thingy and gone back to obeying men in the 'it's better to be a virgin' stakes.

I wonder how many soldiers have died in Iraq as virgins.

I think the others are right, there's no glory in being a virgin anymore.

But all the reasons that you listed are solid reasons for remaining a virgin until marriage. It keeps you from becoming a parent too early. It keeps you from catching nasty diseases. And it shows that you have the strength of character to resist temptation.

It was because virgins wouldn't have venereal diseases, and the child they have is yours. It is a holdover from agrarian societies where lineages and land ownership were critical. (This does not mean promiscuity is good.)

I honestly think it goes all the way back to the making sure she's not pregnant with someone else's kid and her family isn't trying to pawn her off on you.

Otherwise, I'm sure it's religiously based for some cultures.
