I have two very young (3 and 4) autistic kids. Just got two kittens, about 7 and 4 month old. Just wondering.

Of course! Animals are great for autistic kids as they help them to communicate and learn responsibility ( have them help to feed and water the kittens ,and brush their fur) You have to watch that the kids don't get too rough, though, and hurt the kittens. My cousin's 8 year old autistic daughter just got a kitten and she loves her. They have always had animals, but this is the first time Brooke has ever shown interest in one of them.Animals are often used in therapy for autistic children.Good luck with your kids and kittens.

I am not a parent of an autistic child, but I am a cousin of one. I had the privilege to live with my aunt, uncle, and my two cousins a few years ago while I was trying to get on my feet and get into college. My cousin, Dan, is autistic. Dan and I are very close in age and I had seen what he was like many years before on my annual visits up to their house. Back then, Dan was a headbanger, a screamer, you could not keep his attention, he wouldn't sleep for more than an hour at a time, et cetera, et cetera. Flash forward to present day. Through years of sleepless nights, therapy, doctor visits, the whole nine yards- Dan is now a healthy and high functioning individual. What was the major cause of his turnaround? Vitamins. Years ago, at the recommendation of a doctor, my aunt and uncle had bloodwork done on Dan. They found a multitude of vitamin deficincies in his system. Turns out this is not an uncommon thing with autistic children. They started giving him supplements of this and that and, over the course of many years. His behavior slowly became more stable and they altered the supplements to fit his needs as he grew older. This may not answer your question, but it may be an option you or others have yet to explore and I feel that it is worth mentioning. So I suppose that as far as I am concerned, the bloodwork is at least worth a try. No need to try vitamins until you know they are needed. I disagree with people just -pushing- any old whatever on others. But, for what it's worth. Dan has had many girlfriends and never skips lines when he goes to Disneyworld (a trip their family makes every year) Yes, there are stares and remarks, but Dan doesn't care. Alternate answer: **** them. He's your angel and that's all that matters.

As long as you always supervise your children when they are around the cats, it can be a good experience for them. Just remember that small children can seriously hurt a pet like a kitten. They can step on them, sit on them, pull their tails out of their sockets, hit them, any number of things. So just be careful so your kittens don't get hurt.

yes and no. yes if you're going to enroll the kittens in obdience school.

sometimes if a child pets a kitten too long/wrong the kitten will become agigated and scratch.

so the obdience school will teach the kitten to get used to the kittens.

also yes if you're going to stress to your children proper kitty interaction skills.

I think it depends on the cats' personalities, just as with dogs, horses, or any other animal.
