I'm thinking of taking up running but not sure I want to run out in 100 degree heat. I will most likely do my running in the evening or early morning hours, but still, for those of you who have been running for a while, do you still run during the summer, or do you bring it inside and run on the treadmill. Also when winter comes, how can you run with snow and ice on the ground? And how could you keep from getting sick in the winter from sweating outside in the cold air? (Don't tell me getting sick comes from germs not from being in the cold, I know that, but being cold and sweating seems like it would run down your resistance). So how do you deal with extreme temperatures?

You should run in the morning as the heat is much less and any radiant heat from the concrete and asphalt surfaces have dissipated away. Try not to run in the evening as these surfaces spent all day absorbing all this heat. If you MUST run in the evening, go at a slower pace and drop your distance a bit. Also, make sure to take 1 water bottle with you to keep you hydrated, The better thing would be run in the morning.
In the winter, I just bundle up and head outside. This is good as 1) you keep warm, but 2) wearing all these clothes slows you down (and slowly down means you are not beating your body up by training hard every day). You also slow down and this helps to deal with the snow and ice. Just don't be afraid to slow down. Once you are done from your winter run, just head inside to warm up and get quickly into the shower after getting undress. Warm shower will help. I find my resistance to colds during good training actually increases and I find I am fighting off colds quite easily.

Run in the morning or evening in the summer and hydrate well beforehand. Running on a treadmill isn't the same as going out for a run. In the winter I take a hot shower right after I come in from my run and that warms me up and keeps me from getting sick. Just be careful when there is snow or ice and unless you live somewhere where there is a lot of it all the time you could wait for it to melt off.
Stop every 20 minutes!? what kind of workout would you get from that. Just drink a lot of water before and after. Wearing a hat would just make you hotter because it would prevent heat from leaving your head.

When I was running competitively, I tried to do summer runs early in the morning before sunrise. It was actually quite nice, since we could usually watch the sunrise while running.
In the winter, I would run outside unless the ground was icy, in which case it was treadmill or stationary bike time. I always dressed in layers in the winter. On a day between 30-40 degrees, I would usually wear a pair of full length spandex tights, a t-shirt and a long sleeve cotton shirt or a jacket, maybe both on the colder end of the scale. On a day colder than 30, I would wear spandex tights, sprint pants, a t-shirt, and a medium weight jacket, maybe adding a long sleeve t-shirt if it's really cold.
During a long, strenuous run, you'll work up a good sweat even on a very cold day, so you don't want to wear too much.

I run early in the morning when it is cool. When it is cold I wear enough clothes and gloves so the temperature is not a problem. It is not a problem and I do not get sick.
