My cat scratches soft against my shirt or dress or whatever while I am laying or sitting and grabs ahold of it with his mouth and just bites down and continues to scratch-like. It seems weird. He seems like he's in a trance when he does it. Kinda funny cute.

He's probably nursing. Many cats do this and it is just a security thing. Some people think its because they were taken away from their mother too soon, but that isn't always true. My cat does it on my ears and my lips, if I let her. Its very cute. There is no reason to try and stop it as long as he is not causing harm.

All cats do that. Cats who live with humans are eternal children. They imagin their owners are their parents and act accordingly. They will gently scratch just like kittens do it to stimulate their mother's breasts to produce more milk. For the same reason, if you pet the cats on their back, they'll lift their tails up because kittens do it so they can get cleaned underneath their tails.

It probably feels good to his gums and teeth and paws... and if he bites it and paws at it he might feel like a kitten pretending to get milk.. but a lot of cats do that...

Sounds like he's reenacting his nursing and kneeding behavior from when he was a kitten. As long as he isn't chewing off pieces of fabric and swallowing it, I wouldn't worry--it just gives him comfort.

He's showing his affection (not unlike some guys would- in similar circumstances). Sounds like you were MADE for each other. :)
