Whenever a person experiences this sort of restlessness, it is usually a sign of mind clutter. Think of the human brain as a super computer. Now imagine, millions and millions of information folders, which are floating around waiting to be filed away in the banks of your memory. This is your brain's way of telling you to stop and relax. You have to let the brain do it's thing and eventually, so that it can file everything away and let you sleep in peace. The brain has to process all this floating data, digest it, form a frame of refference before filing it away. For your part, you need to assist by learning to relax briefly each day and provide this respite to your brain.

By relaxing, I don't mean go to sleep. You need to learn to meditate each day for about 20 minutes. Close your eyes, and let your mind wander. Let your brain skip, jump and hop inside your head. You need not do anything but let your thoughts come and go. Eventually, you will find that your brain will sort everything out by itself. You will enjoy these relaxation periods so much that you may actually look forward to them. Its a natural high because with every moment you spend relaxing in meditation, you are actually giving your body an added dose of energy. The best part about doing this? You will be amazed how quickly and deeply you will be able to fall asleep very soon. That's just an added bonus.

I've been having the same problem lately. I'm on a medication, though, that I think is causing it. I typically flop around in bed trying to get comfortable & then just get up & surf the net. I've been practically falling asleep at work the next day, however, which certainly isn't good for anyone. I keep telling myself to take my medication earlier in the evening so that the "awake" feeling will go away by bedtime, but I'm not always able to. There are some over the counter sleep aids (Tylenol PM without the pain reliever) that you could try, but you have to be able to devote 8 full hours to sleep.

A hot bath followed by some relaxing "massage" type music can help too. I have a CD that actually walks you through "relaxation" techniques with nice music in the background. Maybe you could look into that. It would at least keep you focused on "relaxing" instead of other things that wander in & out of your mind keeping you awake.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you!

You know I have the SAME problem. I find exercise to be a easy way to slow the brain. A couple of hours before bed go for a walk or a run (depending on your fitness) and just let your mind go while you’re out there. It helps level hormones and get things off your mind.

Other things you could try are: talking to a friend/lover, sex (no lie), warm (non caffeinated) tea, taking 10 heavy breaths to oxygenate your brain.

Oh, another thing I try, its weird but if your desperate. Lay on your back in the dark, with nothing on (no tv, radio etc). And use your fingers and tap your chest with a slow heartbeat rhythm and focus on the rhythm, and then start to slow it down. I don't know why but it helps me, it’s not instant, but 20 min is better than the rest of the night.

If you not sure the rhythm, or sound you can listen to some of these online.

No real doctor would tell you that. He would offer you one of the wide range of sleeping pills that work so well now.

Otherwise, the best way to deal with an unruly mind is to keep it occupied with something besides daily worries. When I'm having trouble, I imagine I'm on an island with no tools and have to build a hut. I rarely make it past the roof! But you can use other things to distract yourself, like concentrating on tightening and relaxing all your muscles, one at a time, starting with your toes and working your way up. If you find your mind wandering back to the other stuff, don't get upset, just pull it back to the relaxing task at hand. It will get easier as time goes by.

I think some of us have restless minds the way some people have restless legs at night. Do consider a trip to the doctor; there are too many nonaddictive sleep aids available now to help you get a good night's sleep without waking up feeling up hungover. Lunesta is excellent. Don't sweat the small stuff, brother. Sweet dreams.

i would suggest to try some Melatonin. sometimes when we are stressed or have pressure in our lives it can affect the chemicals in our brain. Melatonin is a "sedative" that our body naturally produces to help us fall asleep, sometimes it runs a little low. Its all natural and you can buy it at any drugstore. get the 3mg bottle and take one at bed time. about 20 minutes after you take it, you eyelids get a little heavy, just close them and fall asleep. if you happen to wake up in the middle of the night, take another one. its not like tylenol pm or sleep aides which give you a groggy, hang over feeling. this helps you feel rested and good the next day. it really works

everytime you can't sleep make a list of all the things on your mind. During the day take a couple minutes to work on each item of the list

GO to a doctor.... duh...I had the same problem.... my doc gave me Desipraimine.....a simple little anxiety med... but what it does is slow down your zippy mind...lets you focus on ONE problem at a time instead of piling up gobs of them for yourself..... you can take it when you feel you need it and go off it if you feel you don't.... and there's no side effect to fuss about, either.....
