People do change their minds. Or they may not have realized how hard it actually was carrying that box of coke around the store.

I suppose it's because *everybody* goes by the carts on the way into the store, but there are very few other places by which everyone passes, so there's no other logical place to put the carts. I say get a cart when you go in, regardless; then you have one if you want it. If you don't, then you can take it back, or give it to someone who's coming into the store as you leave.

Stores put them at the front of the store because this is where the customers enter. The customer can easily grab one even if they are "just getting a couple of items." They assume people know that a case of Coke can get heavy if you carry it around a bit, and would take a shopping cart with them if the felt they would need it. Solution: Grab a cart when you enter. Even if you don't intend to buy much when you enter, you may in fact pick up a few extras and the cart will come in very handy.

It would be nice if they had a few somewhere mid-store. You would think they would just for the fact that people tend to buy more if they take a cart. If they have to carry their products, they tend to buy less.
On that line of thought, why is it they put the handicap parking down close to the store, and yet the cart return corals are halfway out the parking lot?? Wouldn't it make sense to put a couple closer to the handicap parking so they didn't have to walk farther to return a cart?? Walmart isn't the only ones that do this.

It would take up too much floor space, look messy, and be a hassle for the employees that round up the carts. They could leave those little plastic baskets in key areas though. Maybe a stack by the pharmacy and another stack by the DVDs/Cds and videogames. But most people can easily walk up to the front of the store and grab a cart if they find they should need one.

Oh man! Isn't it so freaking annoying! The Walmart near my house is so busy there are never any carts in the front door, you have to find one in the parking lot on your way in! They should have some at the back of the store also or atleast have some hand basket stations scattered around the store. Maybe we should start a petition...lol, j/k!

They would have to create space for carts that in needed to display merchandise that is for sale. If you decide you need a cart after all, walk back to the front of the store and get one.

My guess is that they want you prepared to buy from the minute you walk in.

The most prestigious grocer in our town has carts at each entrance and in the front center. That store also offers a choice of carts, from basket carts to riding carts for the infirm to monstrous carts for large families. (I love going there and I prefer the little basket carts.)

If enough people ask one of the employees to go get one for them, perhaps they would see the validity of placing a few in a more central location. The fight is on for display areas from every vendor, but the bottom line for any business is how much of your money can they get before you leave the premises.

I have seen stores that have hand baskets spread around the store but not carts. Maybe they take up too much space.

In the meantime, get one of the "may I help you" people to go get one for you!

They are hoping that the more you walk around the store, the more items you see that you want to buy so that way your cart is full by the time you make it to the checkout.
