Do you think the churches would fill up? Or would it become a class thing (like who can PAY for eternal biological life?)Do you think that THE church could survive if immortality was at hand? What? I hear no "Jesus will save me" stuff? I´m already saved.

And you know what? That is almost not Science Fiction anymore.

There would be an outcry about 'playing God', but the wealthiest of the televangelists and top Church leaders would have the procedure done on them too.

Biological immortality is not permanent. All life will come to an end, at least on this planet, within a billion years when the oceans evaporate. The best I could hope for is a significant life extension. But still -- imagine how wonderful it could be to live for centuries!

Modern medicine is doing things today that religions could never have hoped for. Stark reductions in child mortality, diseases (smallpox, polio), improvements in life expectancy, treatments for cancer and other disease.

Obviously life extension will force societies to rethink the way they administer government and certain benefits (social security, etc). And there will probably be large inequities between those who qualify for treatment and those who do not. To be honest, I'm not sure if I want the crook next door to be able to live for centuries. But these short-term issues should not be blown out of proportions -- if society wants to change, then it will.

I know I'm in the sci-fi realm here, but it is fun.
The key to extending life is probably in reducing the damage to cells due to aging and metabolism. I have no idea how to address that, but I hope medicine will be able to.

Still, I'm not very optimistic. 700 million people still suffer from hunger on a regular basis. If we can't even fix simple problems on our planet, what can be hoped for?

Why would anyone (whether they believe in the afterlife or not) want eternal biological life in this crappy dump of a world? I'm not suicidal or anything, but I certainly don't want to extend my stay here either, since nothing is ever going to get any better. People who want to live on earth forever are just afraid of death.

Like all things made by man the final price is almost always too expensive!

Heaven is our goal, Heaven is what we strive for. This world will pass away but Heaven and Jesus Christ will not pass. God chooses when He will take us and this cannot come from man no matter the circumstance.

You can extend life, but it scientifically impossible to be "immortal". We're all dying from the moment we're born...all we can do is postpone the inevitable.
