when the car is in drive and in motion, a thumping noise occurs. it sounds as if someone is knocking on the floorboard. when i looked under the car, i noticed a small gap between the engine and the transmission that was about the thickness of an index card. also there was some type of oil around it and on other parts of the undercarriage. has this happened to anyone else?

It sounds like the case has cracked and it's leaking fluid. It will most likelyneed to be replaced or at the very least rebuilt.
