Alcoholic beverages were created long before Sprite and Cola and other soft drinks were created. Before Sprite you’d basically have a beer, or liquor or some kind of tequila or what have you with your meal. Carbonated sugary drinks (Soda) were originally created to mimic these alcoholic drinks but without giving you a buzz or even permit drunkenness. They weren’t real hard on your system and thus called a “Soft Drink”.
