both nice. The sprinfield has alwys felt and looked a little cheap compared to the other plastic guns(my opinion, not gospel) but i have never heard any bad about them. The S&W is new enough that I have not got to use one yet, but G&A certainly seemed impressed. Check out this months issue. I also really like the poly 45 from ruger and taurus. Have had a millenium (745, 945? crap need to go look) for 4 years now, and nary a problem. In fact, somehow it manages to stay put, when most of my other guns get swapped for whatever has taken my fancy for thais year. I guess i am a bit of a gun whore, as i tend to get around.

I think both are in that category as to which is better is a matter of splitting hairs. Most posts will simply be peoples opinions as most of the poly's from the big companies are stupendously reliable. Best thing is go to a local range, rent both ( or borrow if you can) spend the afternoon with 'em, and see which you shoot better with. You will not go wrong with either choice. Sorry I cant give you a black and white answer, but there isn't one.

One thing to be wary of is "shootablity, can't miss." one can can be very natural pointing for one person, and feel like a brick in the hand of the next. So see what fits your hand (that is why the S&W/Walther 99 has changable grip inserts, so you can customize it to your hand. Personally I dont feel any of the hi-cap poly's are natural pointers. that is one reason i like single stack mags, they feel better in my hand, and if I can't get it done in 8 rounds, I better have backup)

i could bypass with a Springfield XD (in spite of high quality). There are a number of motives for this: a million) The XD pistols have a similar grip perspective as an M1911, this is amazingly gentle. 2) The XD pistol line has no instruction manual secure practices (nicely, some contraptions do), yet has a grip secure practices and a collection off secure practices. those do a similar job as a instruction manual secure practices yet no longer strengthen the time to appeal to. The Glock lacks a grip secure practices, this is (for my area) between the applicable secure practices effective properties on firearms immediately. while you're actually not attentive to it, grip secure practices ability the gun won't fireplace till you're keeping it via the grip. 3) The XD pistol has a strengthened barrel, which leads to a greater secure gun than most of the suggestions. 4) The XD pistol has an ambidextrous magazine launch, so which you will eject the magazine from the two part. 5) The XD pistol has a firing pin indicator and a chambered around indicator, which supply seen and tactile be conscious that the gun is ****** and with a around interior the chamber. 6) The XD has plenty greater suitable out-of-the-field attractions than a Glock. perchance this is purely a private concern, yet i think of the Glock attractions are completely ineffective. 7) The XD is as stable (or greater stable) than its Glock opposite numbers. those effective properties are particularly unique to the XD in terms of the different weapons you have published. i comprehend that Glocks don't have those reward. Then it comes right down to high quality... 40 5 or 40? you are going to hearken to plenty approximately this, yet what it truly comes right down to is what's nice for you. .40 high quality regularly has a decrease shrink back than the .40 5 high quality (counting on the burden). on condition that the ballistics between the .40 and the .40 5 are regularly a similar, the .40 may well be a greater suitable determination. this is totally in all likelihood that one bullet shouldn't do the job, so which you may desire to deliver the gun to endure and fireplace yet another precise shot. you're greater in all likelihood to be waiting to try this with a .40 than a .40 5. there are a number of followers of the two the .40 or the .40 5. notwithstanding you %., you are going to have a nicely-made, stable cartridge. i could advise the .40, for my area.

The XD is the better gun, My buddy has the tactical 45. it rocks. My reasons would be mag capacity, shoot-ability( its a natural pointer so you cant miss) comfort,(easy to hold-mild recoil),and safety( it has the glock style trigger and the 1911 grip safety). Not to mention the gun is indestructible.I have not yet met a person who tries the XD line of pistols that doesn't buy one, they are really that good!

XD by far. More reliable. I also like the grip better on the XD. The M&P is a little more thin side to side. A better comparison for the M&P would be the Beretta Px4 Storm.
I also have to say that the XD has little recoil compared to the M&P. Plus mag capacity is more with xd.
And the extras are great. I have two XDs. .45 and 9mm ported.

I would take the XD for its lack of a "magazine drop safety". The m&p has this feature, and I don't completely trust it. Chances are nothing will go wrong, but I personally do not like too many additional parts on my pistols.

Go to a gun shop and hold both of them, I can almost promise you walk out with the XD. I went in to buy the M&P also, but walked out with the XD...it's like comparing a cadillac's to chevys.

As I already own H-K's and Glock's I know little about these Glock 'clones', as well as other SIG's, Springfields, or the Itralians, except that, unlike Glocks, XD & S&W magazines CAN'T be extended. If you live in one of the Hoplophobe States like NY NJ or CA, you can't own or use mags with more than ten rnd. capacity, anyway.
Especially in the case of the unproven S&W, I'd reconsider my choice, doubly so with the recent news that the DOD is considering dumping the Itralian 'krunchenticker', the M-9, and H-K & Glock are front-runners as its' replacement!

I'd go w/ the XD. They're both overpriced but the XD a little less so. The better buy from S & W would be the Sigma series.

No contest, Poly 45 from Ruger beats them both hands down.
