Theme weddings are catching on, but they can get very expensive. You really need to know the area you are in and make sure there is a need for it where you are now. There are only one or two staging/props companies near me and they do fabulous work. I use the one further away b/c even with extra for delivery it is still cheaper. You need to make sure you can make it affordable for your clients. You also shouldn't limit yourself to only weddings ... cities and states do inaugurations, non-profits hold themed fundraisers and the list goes on and on.

Themes evolved because couples wanted to incorporate something involving their interests and personalities. Not everyone wants the same cookie cutter wedding. Just because you change the couple in every wedding and have the same details otherwise, that doesn't make it personal enough for some people, and that is fine. They may feel that a theme gives it a unifying look and helps them out with decorating and such. It only costs more if you want it to. Everyone decides how simple or elaborate they want to be, and budget is a big factor in that. From what I have seen both online and in real life, things specially marketed as "wedding" are twice the price and half the quality as the same things in another dept of the store that are not labelled "wedding". Many theme items are not from the wedding section so they are not more expensive, regardless of what one may think who isn't even paying the bill. Also, how do you know the couple didn't stock up during clearance sales if they were on a tight budget but they wanted a particular look? Why is this such a big deal? If a couple wants a theme wedding, why not respect that they want to do something that fits who they are and what they like and they don't want it to be just like everyone else's wedding? You as a random stranger don't have to like it. For guests who are attending, it is not an inconvenience on their comfort the same as being charged for everything once they walk in the door for example. Even at traditional weddings, there may be details that a guest doesn't personally like but most people move on and try to enjoy themselves instead of dwelling on it. To each their own.

If when you say theme you mean Elvis or pirates, no. Theme weddings like that aren't catching on. If you mean theme as in the mood and location, such as garden, beach, autumn, nautical/riverboat, traditional, southern, princess/castle, casual etc., then yes. Those types of themes are catching on.
Like the others said, I would specialize in themes but not build my whole business on them. Most people do want a simple, elegant wedding.

i'm sure there is a market for them. but the majority of brides still go mostly traditional or traditional all the way.
i did have a couple friends do a luau themed reception after their wedding.
1 other couple plan to do a halloween theme wedding when they get married
i'm dreaming of having a casual wedding, not sure if that counts as a theme
i have seen a show on tv about wild weddings. themes etc
wish i could remember the name of it...
but there are tons of ppl to market to.. you just have to find the ones that want it for the wedding.
golf, horses, nascar, hunting, rednecks lol, skydivers, sailors...

I would collect more for colors. I would start with red and green. Collect tablecloth's and candles and stuff. Those are really the hot colors. I have seen them at many weddings.
Ive also heard a lot about blue,
and I also know that a lot of people have done a beach themed wedding.

I think it's worth checking into. Theme weddings are huge in Vegas -- 100,000 couples a year go to Vegas to do this. So there's definitely a market for it if some smart entrepreneurs tested the waters in other cities.

I think they are... They are not HUGE yet but I see more and more people having them. I have been to a Halloween one, a "sweets" candy one, a fairytale one, a winter wonderland one.... Most people still prefer the classy and elegant, but themes are catching on! I hope this helps!
