Do you mean slightly damp after you shower?
If hair is oily in the morning, after you washed it the night before - you are using the WRONG PRODUCTS!
Find a shampoo and conditioner for your type hair - oily, normal, frizzy. etc.
Remedial Hairwashing:
1] comb hair before washing.
2] wet hair. Apply 10 to 25 cent size of shampoo to palm, and rub hands together. Apply evenly all over scalp, and scrub with fingertips. Do NOT pile hair up on head. [ makes more tangles, and ends of hair will clean off from suds ]. Do NOT use fingernails on scalp - wet hair is very fragile, and will break off/split.
3] rinse hair very thoroughly.
4] apply 10 to 25 cent size amount of conditioner to HAIR, not scalp.[ scalp doesn't need to be conditioned. ] Gently rub conditioner through hair strands.
5] rinse thoroughly.
6] blot hair dry with a towel - do not rub [ again, wet hair= fragile ].
7] scrub all combs, brushes, anything you can that touches hair.
8] gently remove tangles with a clean wide tooth comb - never brush wet hair.
9] wash sheets/pillowcase at least once a week
10] wash all fabric hats - especially fabric ones you sweat in.
Try this for a few days - should make a big difference.

It won't ruin them but it ain't very good for them. The crackling sound was your hair frying! It'll damage your hair more than the straighteners, but if it was just a one-off it shouldn't hurt.
