Feeding feral and stray cats is done by people everywhere--giving them a reliable food and water source keeps them from starving and in better shape, so they can fight off illness. It also can stop a lot of them from catching birds.
In Milwaukee here if you feed a cat for a month then the city considers it yours. We have people who watch over small colonies, get them neutered for free through the humane society, and let them live their cat lives as they want. They find homes for the tamer ones, if they're lucky, and do it because they want to.
At the very least put out a bowl of water for the cats so they have a place they can drink, and keep the bowl filled all the time.

Can you call up your local humane society and ask about low cost (or maybe even free) vaccinations and neuterings? Some counties have really inexpensive services for stray cats.
If so, they might even have humane traps that you can borrow.
If you feed them, they will set up shop and you will soon be overrun with cats. If you can't find new homes for them (difficult if not impossible if they are feral), it would be nice to get them to stop reproducing and spreading disease.
If they are young kittens, they might be adoptable.
Good luck. It is nice of you to want to care for them. I hope it is not illegal to feed cats in California.

Nope, it's not illegal- provided you're not tresspassing.
You can rent a have-a-heart trap at most pet stores.
What I did was trap, 'fix' and release all the cats livibg around my house...then I fed them every day.
The shelters in calif. have strict rules about trapping because idiots abound who will trap a cat & leave it in the trap for a whole day, or will trap a neighbor's cat, etc.
The best thing to do is trap, neuter, release back at your place & feed them.

It should be illegal. I'm tired a fleas & feces all around my house & paw prints and scratches on my cars, etc. If you want a cat, keep it inside & safe, not free to have to fend for themselves against predators & annoy your neighbors.

that depends on what you WANT to do with them. if they are friendly, you can call a local rescue- and try them first, because they dont kill them. i'd say the local city shelter would be last resort since they do euthanize. if you fear that they may bite or scratch you, then of course animal control will come get them. obviously you are providing a good haven for them to live in. remove the haven and they will move on.

no, not illegal. You can trap them and keep them as your own, neuter them then release them back outside or take them to a shelter to be adopted if they are not "wild".
