Yes Australia has a Minimum wage.

Australia also has a first home owners grant to help Australians - more info go to http://www.firsthome.gov.au

Just on the wages - kids can get less. eg) my 16 yr old gets $9 an hour at a supermarket, (after school job) but $13 on weekends and more on public holidays etc.... so please don't take it that everyone gets a minimum of $20 an hour in any job as age does come into it also.

The average Australian yearly full time adult ordinary time earnings, as at February 2010, is $64,641.20. The average Australian total earnings for all employees including full time, part time, casual workers and juniors is $50,408.80 EDIT: As usual, the answer of one particular answerer is wrong. The minimum wage is $569.90 per week or $29,634.80 per year. How could the median be anything like $30,000 when hardly any workers earn only minimum wage? The median over the last 15 years has worked out to about 85% of average adult earnings i.e. around $55,000.

About $50000 is considered a fair wage in Australia. A basic wage would be in the mid-20K. These days it is very difficult to buy a house, because Australia had a housing boom about 5 years ago and houses doubled and tripled in price in the time afterwards. For an average suburban home in Brisbane (middle of the range) you have to expect to pay at least $400000. For most young people this is out of reach of their income.

Hello there,

The average depends on what position and what industry you are looking at:

However, on a very sterio typical average Retail and F&B etc staff obtain about AUS$15-19 per hour or about $40K per year + Superannuation (before tax)+ Tips.

Since interest rates keep going up, it is increasingly difficult for the average couple to buy a home (3Bed 2Bath 2CG) and next to impossible to buy a home if you are an individual.

The ever increasing price of real estate does not help either. On average a home (as described before) is about $400K-$800K dependant on how close to the city is, in this case, Brisbane.

Unfortunatly, i am not sure where smithfeild is...

Good Luck.

The Federal Minimum Wage for full-time adults is $522.12/week, which equates to $13.74/hour.

The average full-time earnings in Australia is $1,200/week for males and $974/week for females. Average for all full-time adults is $1,119/week.

Older style houses in Smithfield tend to be worth around $320,000 to $370,000, while newer, larger houses can be anywhere from $400,000 to $500,000. Duplexes (two seperate houses with a common wall and shared roof) can be around $280,000 to $300,000.

If we take an average value of $380,000 with a 10% deposit and a standard variable interest rate of 7.64%, monthly mortgage repayments will be about $2,425, roughly $560 per week.

Based on the average wage of $1,119, after-tax earnings will be $870, leaving you with $310 per week to live off. While that's not impossible to do, I would say that's fairly tough for a single person and near impossible if you happen to have a family.

An above-average salary, a second income or a higher deposit will probably be advisable.

On average, about $15/hr. Taxes includes: 15% to 25% income tax, 10% GST on everything (goods & services), medicare levy, council rates, etc. Add to that bank services fees, mortgage/loan interests, etc.
Houses in Smithfield area will cost you around $350k to $450k for a 3BR home, buying a house is not difficult as banks are more than happy to finance your "dream" but repayment on the loan is the hardest part. Welcome to Capitalist Australia!!!

I read that in the paper today - it was $1019/wk which I thought sounded quite high but that is the official average. You could survive comfortably on much less than that if you weren't paying off a house. Of course it costs heaps less to live if you aren't in the main cities.
