What is the compreesor doing? I had a similar problem in a Mustang and was able to replace the clutch and not the whole assembly. Maybe look for a compressor in a junk yard with a warranty. Then you only pay to have it vacumed and recharged.

Between 1000 and 1500. That's a guess, but it is on a par with what I paid when I had to have one replaced.
