I'm going to end up going active duty for the Army and I was wanting to know if there was any US Army bases in Australia. I've been given the option of choosing my permanent duty station and was wanting to go to Australia. If there isn't any, what would be a good location to go for 3 years. I'm planning on getting married soon and am going to end up bringing my wife to live as well... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I forgot to add, I was previously a reservist for 6 years and spent a year in Iraq already at Abu Ghraib Prison. We're not getting married yet. I was going to go get settled in and leave her back to pay off some bills, then come home on leave, get married, then bring her back.

For US Army, don't count on anything in Australia. Japan-maybe; Korea or Hawaii-very possible
Since you are getting married soon, some advice:
If you want to go overseas, I think Germany is still the best thing going now before it all shuts down in a few years. Great opportunity for travel when you have time off; BUT....
Since you a joining the Army, you will likely be deployed to a hot dusty war zone, so if you get a stateside assignment, it is easier for your young bride to go stay back home with her mom, or at least in her home town with her old friends, especially since you'll be having kids before the end of next year (my prediction ;-)
Either way-good luck to you and your fiance; the military is a hard lifestyle for your family to get used to, but you won't regret this decision.
-Thank you

The only place I can think of in Australia is Pine Gap, which is the the satelite listening place. American military has had close connections there for some time and there was discussion in the last 18 months?? that it should 'officially' become an American Base...(going from memory only, will need to research some more).
Australia is a nice place to be posted, we're currently posted here in Victoria. You could also do an Exchange officer's position or something similar. We currently have about 4 American families on base in various roles - term of about 2-3 years.

Rapsson2003 is correct. There is a Military "listening post" at Pine Gap, in Western Australia. There is another at the 'North West Cape', also in West Australia. There is a small base in Alice Springs. All three are technically Australian Bases, but in fact they are staffed primarily by US servicemen, with Pine Gap being mostly Army and Airforce while North West Cape is mostly Navy. I am unsure of the Alice Springs contingent. There are also a number of US Navy people working in Freemantle in West Australia looking after US submarines that make frequent stops there.

No current U.S. bases in Australia. There is still an Army Garrison in Okinawa which is part of Japan. It's the most "Americanized" prefecture in Japan and has about the same climate as Hawaii. There's space available travel opportunities from there to other parts of Japan and Korea.

No Army that i'm aware of. However, there is a small contingent of U.S. Air Force at Alice Springs, Australia.

Germany is nice. If by chance you wind up in Iraqmire which is a good possibility& are injured & sent to Ramstein the wife won't have far to travel.
Not trying to sound fatalistic or macabre, it's always good to have contingency plans while in the Military. It will serve you well if the unspeakable comes to fruition.
Besides they are lots of places to travel in Europe, so you might as well make the most of it on Uncle Sugars Dime.
