Dogs are different. Some breeds can and do watch TV, but they usually only notice when live animals are on TV. My Goldens, in particular, notice other dogs on TV. During the start of the Iditarod sled dog race, my boy Golden would "Chase" the huskies across the room, then run around the wall behind the TV.

the idea behind what you are doing goes back to the concept that dogs are "social" animals. It's been said that leaving on the TV or the radio with human voices in the background makes them less depressed. I have two dogs and we've tried an experiment by leaving them alone with the TV on and without the TV on and being gone for the same amount of time. The dogs seem to appear less depressed with the TV on. However this is not a very scientific test. IMO, keeping the TV on isn't a huge waste of energy compared to leaving a computer on and such. It's just the noise so sometimes I'll leave a radio talk show on. There's no real scientific proof that it makes a difference but for a few cents a day in electric bills, what could it hurt?

Our dog did! She started having symptoms of separation anxiety, where they chew up things or make messes while we are away, so we started leaving on Boomerang (cartoons) just to have some noise and she stopped. They are like any animal that doesnt like to be alone all day in the silence. If you dont want to waste so much energy, try leaving on a radio or music playlist instead. This does the same thing to leave a little noise for them so they dont feel lonely.

I am not sure if he watches it, but it is a nice and considerate thing for you to do because it is a kind of comfort thing for the dog while you're gone. Dogs and cats get really lonely and bored when their owners are out, so the TV is a good idea. Ig you're worried about your energy bill, you can try turning on a small radio. That works just as well.

First off, dogs aren't color blind, and even if they were, that only means that they don't see colors, not that they are totally blind. Secondly, it may help your dog out. A lot of times, inside dogs suffer from seperation anxiety, so having something turned on helps that. My dogs watch the television every time I have some kind of animal show on. I'm sure if it was turned to something like the Animal Planet, it would be a lot more "entertaining" for them. In my opinion, if it seems to be helping your dog, and you can afford it, leave it on. Best of luck!

You do whatever you want to do. I think it's a great idea. My dogs DO watch TV and I know they enjoy having it on when I leave. They are destructive if I don't leave it on (or if I leave it on a religious channel---they don't like Pat Robertson much.) It is using a bit of energy, but less than if you left a light on in your house.

Well, there's no way for anyone to know if he watches them or not, but I do know of dogs who watch TV. If you're concerned about energy conservation, Set the TV on "Sleep Mode" and set the number of hours you want it to play. It'll turn off automatically when the time is up.

I dont' think it does. But you might not want to leave him lose either. He could get into stuff or eat something. Sometimes the get worried and tear up stuff also. Some thing to think about. My 5 yr old now gets worked up if i dont' crate him. I let him go while i went some where really fast. less then 3 hours. He will scratch the doors, rip up the carpet seams near the doors and howel. If i crate him now i don't have that.

I think it's good that you do that, and I'm sure he does pay attention to it. But as long as he has plenty of toys and raw hides to keep him busy, he may not need it. Also, he may enjoy some peace and quiet sometimes. The best thing though, would be to leave some classical or soft rock music playing for him (not very loud though, their hearing is better than we think). That will keep him calm and relaxed and it wouldn't be too loud for him.

Dogs, and cats for that matter, aren't amused by TV or the radio if you are not there.
They may actually have a favorite type of music or a favorite TV show, but if you aren't home, they can't enjoy it because they are too worried about you not being there.
Instead, perhaps videotape yourself doing various normal, everyday sort of things and play the tape for your puppy or kitty when you aren't at home.
