Yes, onions are toxic. They contain several toxic substances which damage your dog’s red blood cells. This results in what is called ‘’Haemolytic Anaemia’’ which means that the red blood cell break apart inside the blood vessels. All forms can be a problem including:
- Dehydrated onions
- Raw onions
- Cooked onions
- Table scraps containing cooked onions or garlic
- Left over pizzas
- Chinese dishes
- Any feeding stuff containing onions
The main problem is that onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated small meals. People therefore do not realise that they ar slowly poisoning their dog with small amount of onions from time to time.
So I am afraid your sister wins the bet ...

Onions are mildly toxic to dogs - best to avoid them completely but not to panic if they eat a little in food.

No they are not, maybe to some dogs. Some people have said that grapes, raisins and garlic are toxic to dogs, what a load of hogwash. I've had yorkshire terriers, alsatians and now 2 staffs, all of which have eaten the above. I can tell you they all lived to a ripe old age, and the staffs are thriving.

Apparently but, like most things, it's very rare for a dog to have a bad reaction to them (bit like humans & nuts) . They would have to have a large amount for it to affect them. All my dogs have had small amounts throughout their lives and it's never done them any harm. Garlic belongs to the onion family but has been used as a proven herbal supplement for many many years.

No they arent. Our Labrador Retriever treats those little onions like a ball & tosses it around & paws at it,When she gets tired then she can peel the skin back & eat it.It gets worse when she comes over to give me a big slobbery lick!! She's been playing with onions since a pup & she's 6 now with no problems at all.
