There is not one single research and booking source that will always be cheapest every time. However, there are some good tools to use that will likely help you secure the cheapest available seat for your parameters, if you use them properly. I would include http://www.farecompare.com http://www.bookingbuddy.com and http://www.itasoftware.com on this list. Additionally, I would add any airlines that do not participate in the other booking sites, such as Skybus, Allegiant, and Southwest if in the USA, or Ryanair, Easyjet, or Vueling if in Europe--for example--because these are often cheapest, but you have to know if they serve the route(s) you need. Check your departure airport's airline list, then check the (lesser-known) airline's route map to see if it helps.

Another way to ensure lowest airfare is to use an airline's booking site that offers a "best price guarantee" or similar program. There are specific conditions which vary by airline, but I always use the first strategies and links I gave you--to find out who's cheapest--then try to book direct from the airline's own website because sometimes it's a little cheaper that way, plus I've got any "price guarantees" they might currently be offering.

I like sidestep.com and orbitz and yahoo travel and cheaptickets.com. Between those 3 you should find the cheapest. If you dont care about what time, take the cheapest airfare, cut about %30 off of it and bid it on priceline. Usually you will get a red eye. Good luck
