ok, here's the skinny, I have a girlfriend from Wales, yes, Wales (it's in the U.K.) I met her over the summer at a summer camp and we decided we'd try the whole long distance thing. The last time I know that I'll see her is the 26th.

so, 1) is this a good idea to keep a relationship with someone so far away?
2) how can I make long distances work easier or better than what I hear?

It's never easy. That's why I tend to stay away from the long distance relationship. Something always goes wrong. You may both find it frustrating cause you can't do much except call back and forth.

It is possible for long distances to work, but the odds are heavily against it. The reasons are quite obvious.

1) The more physical distance you put between you two, the more grown apart you will be.

2) There will be obvious temptations to cheat on one another because you are not near each other.

3) Distance will become an inconveniance because one naturally want someone a little closer that they can see on a regular basis.

If you really want to make a go at maintaining a long distance relationship, you need to absolutely trust each other and be disciplined in making the relationship work. You got to regularly communicate with each other. It can be phone, email or regular mail. Otherwise, you two will be doomed to fail.

It is hard... but do-able.
My finance and I were in a long-distance relationship for a while.
It truely isn't about the distance between you, but it is about how "ready" both of you are to commit to one another.
Long-Distance worked for us. But it may not work for everyone.
I had my doubts about us, I thought we would break-up or something silly would happen and we would never see each other again. But we made it through with long nightly phone calls, shared memories, e-mails, packages, and just know that we would be back together.
So I say: Go for it... Just make sure you are ready and know it takes a lot of commitment!
