My 9 month old puppy, Sayde, will NOT go into the yard (or she does then runs back out..the longest time she stayed in the yard was 20 seconds). We arent sure if she got stung or bitten by something, but she wont go into the yard. How can I help her overcome her fear of yards? I sat in the yard, but she wouldnt come to me, she whined because I was in there and she wasnt. Anyone have any ideas how I can help my "baby"?

More details, that I forgot to mention (that happens to me a lot, sorry) : Theres a dog next door that she used to run the fence with and now she doesnt want anything to do with him, because of the yard being in the way. She usually is on a chain/leash while out there. She wont stay in the yard with me even if I call her ( I like to thank everyone for their advice- I appreciate it, im just very stumped..nothing seems to work..But I will try what you suggested again to see. :) )

I stay outside with her. She cries otherwise. Someone HAS to be out there with her. I dont let her come in right away, I try nicely to get her to come to the yard with me. She cries. :( Breaks my heart

My cocker is extremely allergic to grass and it is actually painful if he is on grass very long. His feet and stomach get rashes. So needless to see he spends limited time in the yard. Out to pee and back inside. He doesn't mind the sidewalk or the driveway....just the grass.

Play with your guy outside, but not on the grass and see if that helps.

Lots of Luck

as horrible as it sounds and as heart breaking it will be to watch you have to bring her into the yard, maybe on a leash and keep her there with you until she settles down.
do you fuss around her when she comes running back inside the house? if so you are reinforcing her behavior by telling her yes there is something out there, good of you to come back inside.
keep her on a leash with you in the yard and feed her some treats. try doing it for 2-3 minutes at a time, let her walk slowly back into the house, then give her a 20-25 minute break and try it again with increasing the time slowly.\
that's what i would do, hope it works!

It sounds like she had something bad happen and she is developing a fear. Forcing her will make it worse. Very slowly feed her every day closer to the yard and she will move forward feeling more comfortable each day. Everytime you try to go that way make sure you have a special treat. And talk very nicely and act like you are having fun. She will start thinking of it as the place where good things that happen not bad. It may take you a week or two but if you force it she will end up growing up to be fearful.

Put a leash on her and make her go out. Once you are outside, close the door so she can not run back inside and feed her treats or play with her out there so it becomes a good place where she wants to be. It may take a few times but as long as you do not show apprehension or try to soothe her (re-enforces whatever fear) she will get over it.

Put a leash on her. Go into the yard with her. Slowly spend a little more time out there. Be sure to play with her as you go.

Take her outside, shut the door and stay out there with her. Try to play with her in the yard.....soon she will see that it is a fun place to be.

She associates the back yard as a bad thing. you have re train her, and reward her for going to the back yard. then she will associate the back yard with affection, love and treats! it takes time and effort,

good luck!

you might tell him to play with you in the yard or else get a dog biscuit and let him follow it in the yard

The best way is to walk all aroung the yard with her until she gets more confidence built up.
