As a server, nothing grinds my gears more than not receiving a tip. I do not get a paycheck at all, because the taxes I have to pay on my tips are taken directly out of my hourly pay. So, tips are my only source of income.

By not leaving a tip for your server, you are also not leaving money for other people the restaurant. Where I work, I am required to pay up to 5% of my daily sales. That 5% is divided between the hosts (people who seat you), the people who clean your tables, as well as the bartenders (for making my tables alcoholic drinks) So, by not leaving a tip, you are also making your server lose more money.

Working a single shift, I usually have food and beverage sales of $500, with a tip average of $90. Since 5% of 500 is 25, $25.00 is taken out of MY tips and given to those people mentioned above, so I only go home with $65. If you don't leave me a tip, I could go home with a lot less, because the money I owe is not on my tips, but on my total sales (food and drink you order)

By the way, yes. You do hurt our feelings. My coworkers are also college students, mothers, fathers, single parents....also paying 1000s of dollars for school / rent / bills / paying for their kids. Not all of us live at home still!!! If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out. Go to BK or the supermarket and make yourself dinner. How do you expect us to pay for school, our homes, or our children, if you can't give us a tip??

I myself am I college student, struggling to pay out of state tuition. I'm up to my eyeballs in debt and this is the best job I can get without a college degree!

Unless your server downright sucks, at the very least leave them 10%. Thanks!!

the tip should be online with the service...If the service is good then tip if it's a really busy place and the service is still good then tip more if the place is dead and the service sucks no tip and no return to that place.waiters and waitresses work hard take all the crap if the food is bad and have to clean up after everyone if they try to make your time there good then they deserve a tip most only get paid minimum wage but still a lousy server shouldn't get something just for being there if they work hard tip well if not then don't unless they are new to the profession and yes you can tell.Waiters and waitresses that give good service will remember you if you don't tip and change the service you get in the future accordingly.
just remember that a server could have been working hard all day serving a bunch of ungratful asses and be in a bad mood these cases are not rare but still at least thank them and hope they have a better day next time but don't tip.Teach them that a smile even a false one can make a good impression.

OK first of all, I am glad you are a student...school may help you understand economics a bit, not to mention how to use your spellchecker and dictionary. But, to answer your question fairly...most waiters and waitresses only make minimum wage if they are lucky. Some establishments pay the waitstaff half the hourly wage due to the fact that they obtain tips from customers.

When you are in a restaurant for lets say an hour and you receive top-notch service from your waiter then you should tip him. The customary tip is at least 15 to 20% of the total of your bill. If your waiters service was tolerable but not the greatest, atleast give him 10% for his efforts as he did assist you while you dined. But lets say you go to a restaurant and your waiter is absolutely lousey. Then it is up to you as to whether or not you find it neccessary to leave a tip for poor service. Keep in mind though how busy it is in the restaurant, waiting on tables is not an easy job. Everyone wants to be treated as if they are number one. Be friendly to your waiter and find out if he is new at his job or if he has been waiting on tables for awhile. These are all great things to consider when leaving a tip.

My grandfather always told me that if you go to a restaurant you should always leave a tip regardless of how you're treated, because one day karma will catch up to you. You never know when you may depend upon someone elses generosity.

I have attached a website with a tip calculator to assist you. I know sometimes mathematics can be tricky. I hope this helps.

I tip 15% when I am satisfied, 20% when I am impressed.
However.. there is an exception such as this one:
Three of my friends and I were at Applebee's when our waitress just walked up with her notepad. No smile, no greeting, nothing. We ordered our food, and we still got no response from her, she just walked off. When we did get our food, she practically dropped the plates on the table and just walked off. Not once did she come back to ask how the food was or if we'd like a refill on our drinks. We had ordered over $40 worth, and left her a $2 tip. I was so disgusted with her service that I reported her to the manager.

A tip is left because you are happy with the service. It is not absolutely necessary. If you want to be rude then leave the server a penny. If you don't leave anything, then they will just think you forgot. Unless you go there all the time, then they will think you are cheap. Just remember, they need to earn that tip from you.
I have read the other answers and I am very surprised. I went to school for hospitality and management. We were taught how to serve correctly and that you don't get a tip unless you earn it. Yes I do know that servers get paid less then minimum wage, but I also know that most servers do not report all their tips to the government. That means there money is free and clear. You talk about the money getting taken from your check to pay the others working for you, but what about the rest of us in this country who then are paying the taxes that you aren't. The people I know who are servers do it for the money, they might get less then minimum wage but get way more then the rest of us who worked at the host or hostess or someone else working a low paying job.

What does prolly spell? You need to eat out less often or if you can't afford the usual 15% tip, at least leave a dollar, better than nothing. Your server may be a mother that is trying to earn enough to feed her children or another collage student like yourself trying to make enough money to buy books next semester.

Do some waitering and you'll find out.

Their pay is lower because it is expected that they will get tips. The tips are half or more of their income. When you do not tip, tho they have given good service, you are being rude and hurting their income. It certainly would hurt their feelings if they worked hard to give you great service and you didn't tip!

By not tipping, you are telling them you were unhappy with their work, and if they know they did a good job they'll be thinking "WTF??? What a jerk!!"

If you're too broke to tip, eat at BK or at home. Only go out if you can afford to tip.

The bare minimum tip is 10%, but it's not really considered reasonable. Good service deserves 15%. Excellent service deserves 20%.

Now that you know that they get paid less than minimum wage and depend on tips to make a living, I am glad it has changed your mind. You too could be a struggling student or wage earner working as a server and would be looking for those tips. Try to put yourself in other people's positions and give them a break when you can. If the service was bad, you may choose not to return but if you do, you may want to re-evaluate your tipping strategies. If you cannot afford to eat out and offer a tip if service is good, eat in more to manage your budget. But remember the pizza delivery guy expects a tip as well.

It can be considered rude not to tip. It is engrained deep in our culture. I understand your point of being a college student, but maybe the waitress is too, and has to work for her school education. I only go out to eat every Fri. night as a reward to myself at the end of the week. I do leave a tip because I don't want 'em talking about me in the kitchen. lol.

If you can't afford to tip you can't afford to eat out.

If you don't tip you are actually stealing money from the server's pocket. Servers are taxed 7-8% on the bill for purposes of income tax. If you don't leave at least that much then the server loses money.

And believe me, you better not make a habit of not tipping at a restaurant you go to frequently. Server's aren't stupid and you can't see what happens in the kitchen.
