I used to get yelled at as a child too.. and still do today.. as an adult..
yes, the purpose of yelling at recruits is to tear them down, and then build them back up again. to make them strong.

It's the drill instructors' jobs to make you miserable. It always has been, and always will be. They want to weed out those who can't cut it, and literally try to break recruits in the process.
If it made you weaker, the military wouldn't want you.
If you really want to see an accurate picture of what boot camp is like, I strongly suggest watching the first half of "Full Metal Jacket." It's the most realistic boot-camp film I've seen. And with good reason. R. Lee Ermey, who portrays the drill instructor, didn't need any special training for the film. He's a former drill instructor.

My Drill sargeant replied to this one:
A Drill Instructors Sole Job in boot camp is to make a recruit fail. They want to make you fail at everything you do and that is what their job is.
They do this so that they know whoever passes will be the toughest, smartest, fastest, most elite warriors ever created. From the first day of boot to the last, nothing you do will be great or even good. Barely acceptable, and never a thankyou in any of your activities.
When you are yelled at by a DI, you hate him and this is also his job: to make you hate him. You bond with fellow soldiers over this common hate, and in doing so, you become stronger as a team as a whole.
hope this helps

They aren't yelling just to yell. What they're doing is part of a process designed to turn a civilian into a soldier.
The "yelling", and getting in their face, and all of that is done to a purpose, and in a well-thought out manner. Also, it's different, yelling at a child and yelling at an adult.
The purpose is to place the recruit under stress, in order to "immunize" them against it. Research shows that repeated exposure to carefully applied stress reduces stress' effects on the subject.
The goal of Basic, in addition to teaching the recruit the basic skills of a soldier, is to get the recruit to be able to think and react quickly and correctly in a stressful situation.
"Stressful situation" = "combat".

Recruits are required to adapt to stressful enviroments rapidly, yelling is the only medium available to drill sergeant to induce such stress.
I deeply regret you lacked the emotional bond with your Father to comperhend his intent to make you a better human being. It is too bad that his efforts were wasted!

well a father doing it is one thing, but a drill inst needs to be tough. What do you expect? them to have people hold hands and eat cupcakes while singing songs by a campfire? I am sorry to hear your dad did that. I know what that is like. My dad yelled alot when he came back from Vietnam

Well if you actually joined the US military & fought in a US war you would notice that in combat everyone yells espeically the officer in charge & if is very effective in helping the military win battles. If there wasn't any yelling at you in fire fight you'd probably get killed.

To get an immediate response, and to force the transformation from civilian to military. It truely is a transformation, sometimes from the outside in, but most times from the inside out.

It's to make them mentally prepared for war. When they are off at war people are going to be yelling and screaming not giving hugs and talking like they would to a kid.
War is tough- they need to prepare you to it and they need to weed out the wussies who can't handle it

This isn't the reason, but a result. If you go thru basic, you will never,. never forget the name of your drill sgt.
SFC Everett Sutton, Korean War Vet,. airborne, When we first saw him, our feelings were " We're f$%%%D!" But as time went by,we realized what he was doing, he got in my face many times, but there was no way in hell I would let him get the best of me. And earning his smile was one of the things in life I am very proud of.
