I heard from someone that you put it up to your ear and tap on it... Is there a way to check?

Howdy,

Yes, there are ways to see if a watermelon is ready to eat. However, according to Purdue University, tapping on the outer skin isn't very accurate.

Apparently, you'll get much better results by examining the watermelon's appearance and feel. The article (listed below) explains that a ripe watermelon will be faded up top. "If the watermelon has stripes, look at the area between the stripes. This area should be a light green."

You can also examine where the watermelon stood on the ground. If that area (known as the belly spot) is white or yellow, the watermelon is likely ripe.

You don't have to put it up to your ear - it is too heavy!

Tap the watermelon, you can hear/feel how hollow it is.

If it sounds hollow, then buy it!
If it sounds dense, then it is not good.

Basically when you cut open a watermelon, you want to see hollow cracks in it - tells you how sweet a watermelon is.

First I look at the side that was on the groung. It should be cream to yellow colored. Then I thump it. I disagree with the hollow sound. To me that is overripe and likely to be grainy and soft not crisp. I read this description. If it sounds like knoking on your head it's not ripe, like your stomach too ripe. It should sound like knocking on your chest. But generally the color is what I use.

I tap or thump it. IT's all in the sound that comes from it, when a person does that.

Thump it. If it sounds hollow, it's ripe.
