In the summer I always hear a bug, maybe it's a type of cricket. It's very loud, it gives off a buzzing sound. It starts off at a certain volume and then gets louder and louder, untill it's very very loud, almost piercingly loud. I only hear it in the summer, and I was curious as to what can get this loud? If your spending the afternoon outside listening to it, it'll probably go off every 10 or so minutes I believe.

my guess is a locusts, which is a type of grasshopper (as is a cricket). It depends on where you live but in the northwest we have a locust which is very loud and when in the forest it is loud enough that you need to yell to talk over them. They only last a few weeks mating laying their eggs in the ground where they live as grubs until next spring. They are hard to find but if you search the trunks of trees where you have heard them you may find an almost clear shell attached to the trunk where they have emerged.
