Most states say 30 days after you become a resident of that state, your drivers license has to be transferred to that state. According to the Virginia DMV website it is 60 days in Va.

It varies by state, some allow you 10 days, others 30, but eventually you surrender your old license for a new one where you now live, and your old license is void. I suppose officially as soon as you are no longer a resident of a state, any license you had in the state would be void since you have to be a resident to be licensed there.

An out-of-state DL is valid as long as you're a visitor. If you become a resident, then it varies by state. In CA, it's only 10 days, but most states are 30.

30 to 90 days depending on the state. Check with your DMV.
