It's actually used often, especially now when people seem so volatile that you can't tell what one might be thinking or how his sentiments would be come the next day.

Examples to help you understand it more:

I found myself slowly estranged from my bestfriend when I realized that she had an eye for my boyfriend. (Meaning she slowly was feeling uncomfortable and was slowly pulling away from her friend)

He has been estranged with his mother eversince he married the woman she disliked. (He and his mother don't see each other often or are not that close anymore, but not necessarily not on speaking terms)

Estrangement was mostly the reaction of his peers when they found out he was gay. (His friends shied away or disassociated themselves from him abruptly when they learned he was gay)

You will find me estranged from you the moment you betray me. (Meaning you are threatening to change your relationship if and when that person betrays you)

First, memorization works only for things such as speeches; you give the speech, then forget what you memorized. If you want the word, use it 7 times.
"Estrange" is a combo word (English/French) meaning "to become strange" (as in strangers) and is most commonly used in husband/wife situations, wherein they say his "estranged" wife. They have grown apart. They used to be loving, kind, friends: now they are distant, remote, even hostile. They have become like strangers.

Estranged means that you no longer have a good relationship with a particular person. You have become strangers, so to speak.

When you push someone away from part of a group or family.

Example:
When I told my friends I didn't like cats, I was estranged from them.

Because all my friends liked cats, once they found out I didn't like cats they pushed me away from them and would no longer be my friend.

A good way to remember it is it has "strange" in it. When a person is strange, they aren't like everyone else. To my friends, I am strange for not liking cats.
