In my book there are environmentalists, environmental activists, diehard environmentalists, environmental extremists, lip-service environmentalists, and roll-up-your-sleeves environmentalists, to name a few.

What does the term mean to you?

In addition to the other comments about the care for, and preservation of, the environment, I think the typical environmentalist is also concerned with cause and effect.

That is, environmentalists concern themselves with understanding the damage to the environment every bit as much as they concern themselves with the implications.

Environmentalists are people who concern themselves with the environment. Activists are the ones who actually try to change things in the country to benefit the environment. Diehards are the ones who really really care about it a lot. Extremists are the ones, that if you don't treat the environment like they do, you're scum to them. Roll-up-your-sleeves are ones that actually go into nature to plant trees, flowers, plants etc. Lip-service, I'm not sure about that one, sorry.

Environmentalist is an umbrella term that covers all of the other titles you have come up with. There are also naturalists, permaculturalists, eco-villagers, and conservationists.
