Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was NEVER a detective, he was actually a doctor by profession, writer by hobby, wrote the stories about Sherlock Holmes.
Writing Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, showed the world, by being a true detective (Holmes), you used high intelligence, strong observation of the "crime scene," and various laboratory tests, to determine thru "clues" normally not seen by the eye, to determine what happened, and 'who did it.' This was the beginning of ALL crime scene investigations now done around the world. So Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, just by being a part-time writer, brought a level of professionalism to Detectives that has never been equaled to this day. He is literally the "father of detective work," now called Crime Scene Investigations.

The best detective, hands down, Sherlock Holmes! Deductive reasoning and observation, combined with a scientific approach is the basis to forensics.

Sherlock Holmes, followed by Sgt. Abe Lieberman (character in books written by Stuart Kaminsky) and then the guys in NYPD Blue. Me, I come in at 32 or 33, I cannot remember which.

A contender would be Pierce Brooks. Investigated crimes like the "Onion Field Murders" and devised an early form of the ViCAP system in the 1950s.

My grandmother was the greatest detective.
She could tell whether adults or children were telling the truth just by looking at them. She could find anything by asking a few questions - almost like a homing device.
She read mysteries fanatically, and would figure out any plot before it was revealed.
Grandmother was expert at critical thinking and was not easily swayed by popular thought. She was kind and firm.
My opinion. I sure miss her.

Robert K. Ressler.
He was the FBI's first profiler, and wrote an amazing book called "Whoever Fights Monsters." It is the most comprehensive book on serial killers and what motivates them.
