i take it pretty easy when i run and my mile time 12 min. But my best was 8min53sec.

You don't have to be a good runner to exercise. Run for 30-60 minutes a day and eat healthy food.

I guess you are taking it easy. I can walk it in 15 mins. and I'm 70 years old. Running perse won't cause you to lose weight. You need to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. Exercise is good as it improves your physical condition but a good diet is as important as a good exercise program. I don't run anymore but try to walk 3 to 6 miles every day and try to limit the meat while consuming more veggies and fruit.

Well, since you seem to be able to run a mile in pretty decent time, you should increase your milage by half mile or mile increments and add hills to your run. Don't try to wear yourself out to the point of pulled muscles, but keep increasing your milage about every week or two.
You could also do something such as: Running a mile and then walk two and mixing it up every so often.

doesn't matter how far you run... depends on how much effort u put in. I can run a mile in around 7 minutes... you just have to put a lot of effort into it and get your heart rate up
