An upside down cross is a symbol for Satanism. A five pointed star is a symbol for Wicca (among other things).

Hollywood and amateurs would have you believe that which way the points are faced (one point facing up vs two points facing up) indicates "evil" vs "good". It's nonsense.

Symbology is very important to people. Even if you personally believe that a symbol is just a picture, the person carrying/wearing that symbol most likely believes in it very strongly, and that means it's a clue to their probable behavior/goals/actions, etc.

Actually, upright stars are protection symbols in the Wiccan faith. Upside down ones are symbols of Satanism, although many Satanists don't use it anymore. I'm a Wiccan, and I sometimes wear a necklace with my pentacle (upright star in a circle) on it.

Modernism and evolution don't remove symbolism from our lives. If they did, white wedding dresses wouldn't cost as much as they do because brides would simply pick whatever their favorite colors are and dress up. Diamonds would just be clear stones, and not many people would buy them because nice quartz chrystal looks lovely. We wouldn't wear wedding rings, and men wouldn't be pressured to buy engagement rights.

Most people don't wear religious symbols, actually. That's why we notice when people do. However, symbols can help us remember things. Sight, like our other senses, can reinforce memories and feelings from our past. In times of trouble, the sight of a religious symbol can remind us of feelings of comfort, acceptance and support we've received from our faiths.

Symbolism isn't archaic. We encounter it in everything from the books we read to the clothing in our closets.

Prejudice, however is archaic. We are too evolved to retain prejudice merely because we see a symbol of something we don't subscribe to ourselves. We know better; we know that other cultures exist around the world. We've talked with people from across the globe on the Internet, and we know that the person we discriminate against may as well be our friend on-line. Hopefully, this fact will rise from our collective subconscious and become the fact we all acknowledge.

Upright stars can mean almost anything. Upside down ones indicate a practitioner of Wicca. We all know what upright crosses stand for. Upside down crosses usually indicate a member of a Satanism group. As long as we can still be obsessed with religion, we will always be obsessed with symbolism.

I'm a Christian, and I agree. A pentagram, swastika, flag or any other symbol is just that. It's a symbol. In and of itself, it is just a design. I find it interesting that some people spend their entire lives being afraid (or overly protective) of symbols. True, I do own a crucifix and regard it as a symbol of my faith, but if somebody walked up and put my crucifix upside down, the world wouldn't stop turning.

I don't see the big deal ina upside down star, but a upside down cross symbolizes disrespect towards Jesus' sacrifice, alot of times (if you believe in demonic possession, i really don't know for myself ) if a person is possessed a cross will go upside down on the wall. I higly recommend not hanign a cross upside down

Well actually, the the star of David has uni axial symmetry so you can turn it however you want.

But seriously symbols can be important to people of any group, religious or not. By definition they stand for something that people have a strong connection with.

Symbolism is an expressoin of a person's feelings. That's like saying "don't you think we are too involved in brand-name clothing."

It's the same thing, an expression of a person's person, so no, I think Symbolism is great!
